Friday was bitterly cold and i biked with my LO in tow, so on the cargo bike. i should have given her a blanket for her legs, so i gave it to her on the way back (my fleece jacket) but she didn't need it then, just on the AM ride in after the descent into Manhattan. i should have shed my puffy jacket on the way back home too as it was warmer.

she loves the ride, even in the cold! i guess we dress her well for it :) all that practice dressing for ice skating and skiing.

Today was super warm but since it snowed, there was still a lot of snow and ice on the bridge. stoked to have my studded tires today. i imagine by tonight it will all be melted since temps are in the 50s. what crazy weather we're having!

How was my commute... I can sum it up in one word, f****d. I was going to take the bus this morning due to it being in the low 30's and raining, so I hopped on the bus to take me to the bus transfer station. While waiting for the bus that would take me out towards where I work early I saw a couple of my coworkers waiting for the same bus and thought I saw them get on, so I quickly threw my bike on the front bike rack and hopped on. Turns out it was the wrong bus and I didn't find out until it turned to go a different direction at what would have been half way. So I quickly hoped off the bus and had to ride in the rain any how. Due to where I got off I had to ride through mud and deep puddles. Around about the last mile my rear hub breaks, and all of the sudden my rear weal is wobbling and rubbing and randomly switching gears, which nearly got me hit by a car a couple times. By some miracle I actually managed to get to work slightly early... though my rear wheel is toast.

I had to hoof it home because I wasn't going to wait for the evening bus.

Edit: sorry about the rant and profanity.

We've all had one of those days for sure.

No ride yesterday as we had a icy mess here in DC in the morning...followed by rain all day and then an almost spring-like evening.

Just above freezing on a calm ride in although I did get one car beeping at me for no good reason.

First day back to work after a 10-day vacation. It felt good to ride, but I went down on some ice on a connector path between my neighborhood and the main road in. Wham. No damage done, however, except a tear in my pannier Velcro strap. I can sew that back tonight.

First ride with Marathon Plus 622-37 on the rear. Hopefully no more flats for a while...

Finally got a ride in today after not riding since Monday a week ago. As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, my wife hasn't been able to drive since getting a concussion 5 weeks ago. She is going to try today. Between our 3 kids at least one of them has an activity everyday that needs to be driven to. I've been driving to work in order to get home in time and do that shuttling.

But I biked to work today. About 37 degrees with damp roads from overnight rain. The sun is out and we'll be in the mid to upper 50s this afternoon.

Good to hear your back on the road, mgw4jc, but your priorities have been in the right order.

Today was my first bike commute of the week due to icy roads on Monday and heavy rains on Tuesday. The only good thing about the rain yesterday was that it washed all of the salt off the roads. We had snow/sleet/freezing rain last Friday as well as Monday. The weather has made it difficult to get any exercise at all some days. On Monday, the streets and sidewalks were so icy that it was hard to even walk. The ice storm we had last Friday left icy patches on roads and greenways that made cycling sketchy over the weekend. I managed to ride 51 miles on Saturday with friends but we had to be extremely cautious in spots where the ice hadn't totally melted, and the high temperature barely reached the freezing point.

This morning's 8 mile commute was easy and uneventful. 27 degrees with a light tailwind. Not much worth noting.

Yesterday morning's, though, was a bit more noteworthy. A balmy 31 degrees with a brisk headwind. While the temp was downright balmy for SD in Feb, we had gotten freezing rain during the night. The main roads had been treated with chemical and weren't too bad. However most of my commute is on back roads and a MUP. The MUP was a sheet ice skating rink. Running studded tires I didn't have too much trouble. Just had to slow way down on a couple sharp corners.

I did to get my "revenge" on another commuter though (tongue firmly planted in cheek.) There's a guy on a fat bike who passes me frequently when I ride that route. Especially when there's snow on the ground. My 2.25" tires plow through the snow, and his balloons float right over them. In those situations he passes me like I'm standing still.

Well, yesterday morning I came around a curve on the MUP and saw the same guy struggling to keep his fat bike upright on the ice. He was sliding all over the place and going really slow for fear of crashing. It was my turn. I rang my bell and whizzed by him saying, "Good morning! Path is a little slick today, huh?" He laughed and waved as I passed. My studded tires easily allowed me to maintain close to normal speeds.

In Florida the last couple days where I got to see nice weather from hotel meeting room window! 30F and it snowed last night but the MUP was totally clear. I think it's because they so over salted there was enough leftover salt to keep the trail clear. Whatever, worked for me!

Forgive me, BikeForums commuters, for I have sinned. It's been three months since my last bicycle commute. In that time, I have over-indulged my ice cream cravings and skipped many morning workouts. I have even driven an automobile to work on occasion.

It's been a pretty mild winter for Edmonton, so I have less of an excuse than in previous years for not riding, but I finally got up the gumption to ride today, first time since mid-November. -6C / 21F with a very slight headwind, with an above-freezing forecast for the ride home. Pretty uneventful, but I really felt it on the hills. It was a bit scary on one hill on a narrow road riding straight into the sunrise, but thankfully, the two drivers that passed me on that stretch saw me and gave me a wide berth. I couldn't see a thing.

hyhuu 02-17-16 12:43 PM

At 5 am and about a mile from home, looking down I was thinking "man it looks icy" and less than a second later I was down. Looking ahead it looked like there are more ice so I turned around and took the bus to work.

timvan_78 02-17-16 05:03 PM

Yesterday I had a different route after work—I had some time to kill before meeting up with the fam in East Van. Stopped at a combination skateboard store/bike repair shop that has an arcade on the side.30 pinball machines, so I put in 30 minutes on the Metallica and Terminator pinball games.Awesome.

Raining this AM. Glad I tuned up my brakes last night—some crazy woman squirrel-walking on the MUP. All good.

This week finally not a lot of wind and no rain but it was cold and clear. Perfect for riding the 15 miles to work on my bike and taking some nice pictures :

This mornings commute was a nice uneventful ride to work. The temp was 28f degrees when I left the house. I noticed light coming up earlier than it has been, so spring must be on the way. Most of the roads were dry and clear except at bottom of the hill there was the ever present icy patches, but I crossed the street just before that. The road into the building had had plenty of patches of ice also.

mr geeker 02-18-16 06:13 AM

Yesterdays commute was far better than Tuesdays. Due to killing the rear wheel on my huffy super beater I pulled my Giant out of winter storage (it was hung on the wall in my room) and rode it. I kind of wish I could find a cheap beater (or cheap rear 5-spd wheel) to carry me through the rest of winter and the first good chunk of spring, but I don't see that happening.

This mornings commute should be good, every thing that melted should be froze over and by the time I'm headed out in the evening it should be near 60... so today should be good.

edit: Temp. got up to 53 F around the time of my evening commute and I almost took the scenic route home because of it.

Yesterday afternoon was a prime illustration of the windchill effect. Temps were in the mid-50s, 15 degrees warmer than my morning commute, and I was cold all of the way home. Winds were blowing right out of the north, however, and I was riding right into them most of the way. When I got home, my clothes weren't sweaty at all, yet they were quite damp in the morning when temps were about 40. In fact, my clothes were much sweatier this morning with temps about 32 F and nearly 25 degrees colder than yesterday afternoon.

Yes to that ^^^^!

First ride of 2016 with no headlight - none, nada, zilch, zip. Temps were 29F but that's ok... there's hope for winter's end

mgw4jc 02-18-16 11:09 AM

tarwheel, I fought that same headwind going home last night. I was about to get into a groove on one stretch when I got slapped in the face by a stiff headwind.

This morning it looked light enough to ride without lights. I even switched from my clear lens glasses to regular sunglasses. Which then made me think it was darker than it was. It was colder out today than yesterday at 27F, but the only gear change I did was my warmer mittens.

High of about 50 today.

tarwheel 02-18-16 12:49 PM

I've about decided to remove my dynamo wheelset this weekend because my commute is mostly in daylight now. I'll go back to using my rechargeable LED lights until next fall. I've enjoyed the dynamo lighting but it has definitely slowed me down. Although my bike doesn't "feel" slower, my data show me that the dynamo wheel reduces my average speeds by 0.5-1 mph, which adds at least 5-10 minutes to my commute times. It also makes me feel more tired.

timvan_78 02-18-16 01:45 PM

Three drenchers in a row and counting. (The non-raining commutes are still wet.) Is that moss growing behind my ears?Am I getting webbed feet?Gills? ;

I hate it when cars do the “slow roll” towards me. It’s dark and raining and I can’t ensure eye contact.I don’t know if you are going to keep rolling slowly or gun it, so I’m waiting until I’m sure you’re stopped.

RidingMatthew 02-18-16 02:29 PM

I left late yesterday really late. like 12-15 minutes late and I had to hustle. LOT LOT MORE TRAFFIC. I fought headwinds home. I was glad to make it home after battling the wind most of the ride home. 21F this morning but a good ride. Felt weird because there was so little traffic.

essiemyra 02-19-16 06:00 AM

Another nice uneventful ride this am. The temp was 16f degrees with almost a clear dark sky that lightens ups along my ride.

mr geeker 02-19-16 06:20 AM

Currently 54 F out, winds 20 from the west :thumb:

mgw4jc 02-19-16 07:12 AM

Right about 30F and clear this morning.

My wife got me a handlebar mount for my phone at Christmas. On some mornings I'll turn on music to listen to while riding. I'm not using headphones, just the phone speaker so I still hear everything around me. But I wonder if the person walking her dogs can hear my music when I ride by. Or the kids waiting for the bus. Probably not.

tarwheel 02-19-16 07:39 AM

Coldest ride of the week this morning, with temps in the upper 20s. I had to watch for black ice as we've had so much rain/sleet lately that water is still draining across the streets in spots. I've been cold all week while riding due to a stiff N wind, so I dressed warmer today and it really helped. I was a little sweatier when I got to work but I can deal with that.

esmith2039 02-19-16 07:40 AM

First bike ride since 2/1.. great weather! The wind is another story, pushed me in but the ride home might be a fight!
