Another beautiful springlike day, with morning temps in the low 50s and the high supposed to reach near 80. I was riding right into a headwind, however, and that slowed my pace a bit. Hopefully the wind direction will continue, which should make for an easier ride home. My commute on my cyclocross bike yesterday turned out to be a one-day event because it was making so many creaking noises that I was driving me crazy. My bike shop replaced the cables the other day, and I installed a new wheelset over the weekend, and one of those two changes apparently caused the creaking. Now comes the fun part of trying to isolate the cause, but that will have to wait until next weekend.

Itchy eyes this morning - how great is that, gotta be spring allergies! Rainy and 60F. It hasn't been warm long enough for me to trust the thermometer so I overdressed. Didn't matter though - would have been wet anyway with the rain
|
Signs of spring - the roadies have emerged! I had a "rabbit" to chase yesterday, for the first time in months. My legs are telling me about it today, so I've gotten softer over the winter than I realized.

Terrific ride today! This week is spring break for the local college, and traffic is super light. Also, I wasn't in a hurry to get in today, so I was able to work on my bike set up some. Yesterday I overhauled the bottom bracket and took care of some braking issues. Front still squeals, but I'll see what some light sanding on the pads will do. I could also use a longer stem - maybe 10-15 mm more. I brought the seatpost down about 1/4 of an inch once I got to work. Still pretty aggressive, but the ride was pretty comfortable. It's not an every day commuter, anyhow. Most importantly, it fits into my wife's car - unlike my Peugeot.
http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/...psl9d873vn.jpg One of the shops around here is having a big spring promotion, bringing in representatives from various dealers of bikes, wheels, and trainers. I went yesterday (and will likely go again today) to enter into their raffle for a $100 gift card. While I was there, the owner said I seem to know a lot about bikes, and I told him I had previously worked at another shop before it closed down and he offered me a job on the weekends. I went ahead and filled out an application, and while it will be nice to have a few extra dollars and a shop discount, I'm not 100% sure I want to commit my weekends away. I guess as long as I make it clear I don't want every weekend all weekend, and I can always quit. So we'll see. Unlike my last shop job, this one is very close to my real job, meaning it will take me 20-25 minutes by car...and also unlike my last shop job, I have a bike lane and fairly good roads to get to this one by bike. |
Wet! Unless it's just a drizzle, I usually leave my bike at home on rainy days. Today I braved the storm and enjoyed it. Rule No. 9 in effect! ;)
Looking forward to the time change this weekend! |
This morning it was some where around 39-40 and it was great! This evenings was even better, I was faster than google maps estimated time by roughly 10 minutes. I checked for the heck of it when I got home.

'Nother beautiful 40 F mornin', with a chance of a 60 F evenin' commute. :thumb:
|
I caught another rider today who looked like a commuter - orange reflective vest, upright bike, knobby tires, and a seat mounted trunk. We chatted just a bit. It turns out he was just out on a 15 mile loop and said he was riding this bike for training so the road bike would feel faster.
Overcast this morning but almost 60F. Short sleeve jersey and shorts - back to summer apparel! |
1 for 3 so far this week. I commuted Monday because of the threat of storms and flooding all week. I should have ridden Tuesday but didn't. Tried to go yesterday but it was pouring rain when I woke up. Thought we would have breaks in the rain this morning but it was pouring when I woke up again this morning. So I've been driving to work ever since Tuesday. :(

Rain, day 2 - wondering if some of my stuff will ever truly dry out. 57F though so who cares!!

Awsome weather lately. Was 64F or so this morning. First time just riding in short sleeve jersey and bibs this season. But then I go and do an assenine thing like sliding and going down on the metal grate on the GWB. Got a good knee scrape:
http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=508847 It seems like I need a reminder every year of how slipery metal is when wet. :( |
Headwind on the way home last night, headwind on the way in this morning ...
Trail is getting really crowded, I'm not used to this after winter. |
Very warm and humid this morning with temps in the mid-60s, and I rode without a jacket or vest for the first time on a morning commute this year. This was my second 4-day bike commute week in a row, thanks to the favorable weather. Life is good.
|
Nice ride in this morning, just above freezing, didn't seem quite so arduous as the two rides I did last month! Roads and trails are mostly dry, but there's still quite a bit of ice in some low and/or sheltered areas. I'd like to get out the lightweight bikes, but that's maybe a bit premature yet.

Monday, Monday. I was off work on Friday, so no commute.
Kind of foggy this morning after some overnight rains. Quite humid too. I left a little later than I need to and was a couple of minutes late getting in, but a good ride anyway. |
Although I rode to work a few times in February, starting today, I think that this year's regular bike commuting has begun.
However, it was an awful day to start with rain and a small amount of headwinds all in 1C/34F temperatures. My head was wet and somewhat cold (it got better as I warmed up). I rode my winter bike with DIY studs which was unnecessary for most of the ride but near the end there was some clear ice under the flowing water along the MUP. I'm glad I had my bar mitts because they kept my hands dry and warm. This afternoon and tomorrow should be nicer. |
Strange morning, with the time change to begin with and then the temperature dropped 5° on the way in. I didn't expect this weather front until tomorrow for some reason so I'm on my road bike dressed light, no fenders no rain gear, just a backup headlight, and thunderstorms headed this way. I'll get home fine but it's disconcerting to be unprepared.

Pretty foggy this morning. Visibility less than 100 yards. Couple that with the time change which meant darkness when I left and it was an interesting ride to work. There were times where I couldn't even see where I was in my lane, and forget about dodging potholes. The good news is that the other vehicles on the road were sparse and moving slow.
Crossed the 500 mile commuting mark for 2016, so that was pretty cool. |
Wet this morning, rain not heavy enough to put on all the gear, but wet enough that I didn't like it much. Riding through the swamp, though, I heard peepers for the first time this year; two or three on one side of the road, one lonely one replying from the other side of the road... there will be more tomorrow, for sure! Spring is on the way, and I'm glad about that. Still kinda cold at 5 AM, though....

Warm and very humid this morning with wet streets from monster thunderstorms we had last night. I normally would have driven today because the forecasts are calling for more storms this afternoon and tonight, but I am going out of town for several days this week and I'm trying to squeeze in another ride. The storms this afternoon aren't supposed to really kick up until after dark, so I'm hoping they'll hold off long enough for me to ride home this afternoon. However, if it gets really bad I can always catch a ride with someone. There is no way I would have ridden in the storms we had yesterday.

Wet and dark, 58F and thunderstorms this afternoon. Haven't had that in the forecast for awhile!
|
Just below freezing and breezy this morning. I took a trail I haven't been on since probably last summer, and lo and behold, it had been paved since my last time on it. Used to be gravel. I normally avoid that trail, partly because it was gravel, but mostly because it runs next to a popular off-leash dog park, and I've encountered too many poorly controlled dogs there.
The river running through the city is still 95% iced over, but I noticed a pair of ducks swimming in a thawed spot. Seems early for ducks around here. Happy pi day to my fellow nerds! |
Was 47F, wet and rainy in NYC. But at least its not a tropical storm? :) Had the Novara rain jacket I got from REI with the pit zips. It's doing its job well, no complaints. I used a Park derailleur hanger alignment tool for the first time last Friday morning. Not bad. Was initially worried about crossing the threads but it seemed to go on better than I thought. I fell on the GWB the day before on the right side. So needed to check the derailleur hanger. It was off as I expected since I've smacked it (and my right knee) pretty good.

What a difference a few hours makes! The weather that was worrying me is passing North instead, and it is still bright and sunny 78°, perfect riding weather. So all of my mistakes from not checking the forecast this morning have turned out brilliant.
tarwheel, the tail end of what you're looking at for tonight, but I think there's a good chance it will pass by Raleigh as well. |
Drizzly, rainy but warm for the commute +6C.. much nicer this evening.. I do nights so i'll be glued to the radar to see if i need the rain gear again.. At least it's washing the salt away.. i'm riding the IGH so not worried about gear corrosion..

A pleasant cool drizzle and 46 degrees greeted me this morning. Happy to be a bike commuter. : )
|
Pleasantly cool, 1C/34F, overcast so I arrived without seeing the sun but at least it wasn't raining like yesterday. Still some icy spots on the sidewalks and MUP so I'm continuing to ride my winter bike (which is in desparate need of an overhaul that will have to wait for a couple of weeks).
|
We had some thunderstorms last night, but all was good this morning. A pleasant 52F. I am starting in the dark again but gets light about halfway through my ride.
We are forecast to break 80 today, much warmer than normal. |
Unusual commute for me today, a one-way trip to work with full panniers. I have to go to an out-of-town meeting this afternoon, but I'm riding with a coworker and don't need my car. So I packed all of the clothes and other items I would need for the trip in my panniers, as well as a fresh towel and some other clothes that I need at the office. We won't get back until tomorrow afternoon, but I'll be able to complete my commute home with some clothes that need washing and other gear filling the panniers.
I got lucky yesterday and the rain held off during the workday and ride home. However, for the second day in a row we had massive severe thunderstorms after it got dark. This was a really bad storm with a lot of hail, heavy rain and wind. |
38F and drizzling.
I was going to drive today because of a lunchtime errand but my wife reminds me that this particular errand would not have stopped me from riding in the past, I actually would have sought it out, so I did ride after all. Whew. It is a lot easier to drive now that we have a 2nd car, even though I really dislike driving. Need to ditch it now that the need for it is over... |
