I really like that bike, beauty!!

Little chilly for mid-May, mid forties, but a nice sunny ride nonetheless. No wind. With a light jacket, it felt like 70. So, gotta love it.

jrickards 05-19-16 06:33 AM

Today's commute was nicer than the last 3 days with a temperature of 7C/45F but it was cloudy overhead and although the light of the sunrise could be seen, it was in patches through the clouds. The ride home should be much nicer with a temp of 22C/72F, hopefully sunny.

Record time today (for this year, on this particular route), I'm happy. However, I have to build up endurance because in June, I have registered with Great Cycle Challenge to do 1,000km by the end of June. I can do it, I just need to build up endurance.

Heavy rains in the early morning hours had me worried. But just before I was to leave it let up and had all but stopped. Wet roads and only a light drizzle were on tap for the first 11 miles. Then a more steady rain made sure I was good and soaked before I got to the office. 60ish degrees.

I was making great time this morning - I had a chance at breaking the 30 minute door to door commute, something I've done only once. So in the last 1.5 miles, I hear a siren, no wait, lots of sirens. It was a diplomatic motorcade! I pulled over because they don't tolerate any moving vehicles on the road. They are neat to see - there were probably at least a dozen motorcycle cops, the usual black Suburban-type vehicles and 2 or 3 limos, and no, I could not see who was inside. Okay, so they pass and I see I still might make the 30 minute mark. I get up to a stop light, wait...wait...wait, make a left, and then the next crossroad has a huge line of cars that has to pass (probably delayed by the motorcade), and that is when I knew it would be another typical commute time. Oh well, I'll try again next week. Tomorrow is Bike to Work day so I'm stopping at 2 rest stops.

Fell this morning. First time in a long time. I was thinking about making a left out of McDs parking lot, then decided to go to the light at the corner. Front tire caught the curb. Tried to save my coffee but failed.

Nothing hurt but my pride. Somehow my light came unclamped, fell off the handlebars, then clamped shut again. The clerk inside gave me a funny look when I asked for a refill.

Tundra_Man 05-19-16 07:40 AM

Got up early and took the long way to work, just for the fun of it. Rode 18 miles. It was beautiful out.

ptempel 05-19-16 09:53 AM

Great weather for riding lately. Was about 55F or so this morning so only needed a baselayer, jersey, knee covers and bib. Yesterday seemed colder and got caught in the rain later in the day. Had to stop and put on the baselayer midride going home. wunderground.com showed 66F yesterday afternoon but it felt colder than that and the rain made it slightly colder in the short sleeve jersey.

my bike commute haiku:

The rain drops on my
face and the breeze blows and I
breathe hard and go on

.
.
.
so my commute has been pretty good, but kind of crazy. our office moved and now i have to find a sane way to get to Manhattan bridge from Battery Park City in the afternoons. it's proven a challenge but i figured something out after a week of test rides after work.

it has been better, but yesterday i witnessed two cars drag racing on the manhattan bridge, hitting speeds of 80+ mph. i was not happy about that. even tho we're protected and on the other side of the train tracks. it's still unnerving and i could still feel the drag.

tomorrow is bike to work day and transportation alternatives is going to set up commuter stations in the AM! so i'll help with that. i get to go in tomorrow with my daughter so she'll help us too. (after all she's part of our family membership with TA!).

Have been off of bike four weeks now. It affects my attitude a lot.

Windy & Headwind to match my ride home last night with occasional drizzle, 50*... my legs are on fire... but it is a good feeling... On Day 4 of (mostly flat with some long hill-climbs that leave me screaming at myself to keep pushing and not walk * *) round trip commute 43 miles ... at work shower and morning denver3 egg omelet are my prize in the AM ... 1.5 lbs down so I am feeling good to see a healthy drop ...

Sorry to hear this Darth Lefty. Is everything okay?

I hope that you can be back soon enough.

Darth Lefty 05-19-16 03:20 PM

Yeah, mostly ok. Just not for bikes.

Sorry to hear about that. Some mornings are like that.

It was a pretty strong headwind coming home today, but for some reason it didn't feel quite as tough as usual. It could be the vintage steel bike I rode today--lower drop position, thinner profile, skinnier front tire (23mm front, 25mm rear), less bulky clothes (no jacket), I felt like I was cutting through the wind almost effortlessly. The only thing about this bike that I minded slightly was the DT shifters, but I didn't really mind it that much.

Johnny Mullet 05-19-16 06:28 PM

My commute today was nice. Very chilly in the morning, but nice and warm on the way home. Looks like tomorrow will be a carbon copy.

essiemyra 05-20-16 05:03 AM

An excellent commute, but I am not sure if it is just because it is Friday or just great riding. Either way it does not matter. I will enjoy the extra happiness. The temp was 47f degrees with clear skies.

baron von trail 05-20-16 06:02 AM

Sunny, just under 50 degrees--perfect morning for a ride in shorts and a T.

Kind of screwed up a bit this morning by pushing it a bit too hard a bit too soon. I felt extra strong this morning so stood up on the pedals a little earlier than normal. The result was bad. About halfway up this little hill, I felt a sharp twinge in my knee. Dammit! She's a little sore, especially to the touch, but otherwise fine. Nonetheless though, I felt it every time I stood up on the pedals the entire rest of the ride in. No problems though when spinning.

HAPPY NATIONAL BIKE TO WORK DAY!
Shouldn't we all get gifts and praise and recognition??

If I ride home tonight I will have a four week streak of 10 for 10 rides. Not too bad.

It was a nice ride in this morning (8C/46F and sunny) but a bit of a slow ride because I hit every red light and at a stop sign, the car in front didn't move for a moment, even tho there were no cars around so I had to come to a full stop behind and unclip and put my foot down.

Tomorrow is the beginning of a long weekend in Canada, Monday is Victoria Day, so this weekend is affectionately known as May 2-4 weekend (referring to a case of beer or cases).

I understand that today is Bike to Work day in the US, have a great ride everyone!!

Tundra_Man 05-20-16 07:20 AM

Yet another glorious morning. Been beautiful all week. Sounds like the rain will return for next week so I'm glad I took advantage of it while I could.

Went for a run, then rode to work. Got attacked by a goose again. Apparently I have a face that geese naturally hate.

Allycat24 05-20-16 07:25 AM

Very nice weather today for bike to work day. We have a 2 day window of sunshine, and then it starts raining (AGAIN!) tomorrow. A lot more cyclists on the trail today, which is to be expected. Most seemed to be savvy riders but I did see one knuckle head almost get wiped out by a truck. My office is holding a lunch time fun ride around DC today - I usually avoid riding in groups, especially since you never know the skill level of these folks, but the weather is so nice, I think I'll go.

bmthom.gis 05-20-16 07:49 AM

Happy Bike to Work Day! I know some of you have it on different days, but I do believe today is the nationally recognized event. Had a great one here. Overcast and threatening rain here. I was the only bike I saw until I met up with the local Advocacy group on their way to the State House (where we ride down Main St for some coffee and donuts).
Last night, in preparation, I did my first hub rebuild. I've been chasing down a squeak for the past couple of weeks. I was convinced it was the drivetrain because I would only hear it when I put the bike under load but nothing I did with the chain or cranks fixed it...so I thought maybe it was a hub. Bingo! And for the icing on the cake, my wheel didn't fall apart on me when riding in!

wphamilton 05-20-16 08:18 AM

Not in the best situation today. I've let my chain go for too long on that bike and I'm suddenly getting chain drops with any real force on the pedals. We're still expecting an inch of rain this evening, so I'm not looking forward to that first hill, dropping the chain climbing in a downpour. My plan is to use the lowest gear and go up easy.

tarwheel 05-20-16 08:37 AM

Finally a day with no morning rain showers, and fortunately it coincided with Bike to Work Day here. I had volunteered to help out at the city's BTWD venue downtown and wasn't looking forward to it if we had another rainy morning. It was cloudy and cool, but at least it was dry. I was supposed to be helping people figure out commuting routes and didn't get very many requests for help, but I do pass out a lot of maps. More importantly, I was able to some free swag -- including a t-shirt, insulated bottle, snacks and coffee. We had a lot more bike commuters show up than I expected, particularly considering the weather this week, which has been almost nonstop rain since Tuesday.

snow_echo_NY 05-20-16 11:07 AM

happy bike to work day!
we rode in early - i had to take my daughter to back up care in manhattan so i brought her with me on the Yuba. We volunteered at one of the commuter comfort stations that Transportation Alternatives set up by the bridges and other high-traffic spots. it was great.

(TransAlt is NYC's cycling and pedestrian advocacy organization)

some were instagramming and tweeting the event - this is us: https://twitter.com/BikeLukeBike/sta...20234112933888

after her bout of shyness, she enjoyed it tons. theres a bike to work party next week but i think it's pretty late so we might not be able to join this year. last year our little one rode her little bike to the party. it was awesome.

Nice! Although I bet those pictures would make Hypno Toad nervous just looking at them. ;)

I'm not sure if it's bike to work day in this area or not, but it was for me. My new commute is so short and follows my route to the credit union for the most part that I keep getting to work and feeling like I'm just starting to get warmed up.

Today compared to last night where I rode through a torrent of rain for the 23 miles home was pure heaven... sun was out birds were chirping, I was able to coast through any sidewalk or stop light I came up to without stopping... locked the rear tire for my first time ever commuting but managed to stay upright and not wipe out but it certainly got my attention. i just not used to taking corners at high speed on cycle tires... my motorcycle certainly would not have had the trouble as it is well... significantly heavier =)
