Just started taking my 10 mile commute by bike a few weeks ago, started with one day a week, this week I've done three days in a row. Looking forward to the long weekend to give my legs some rest, hopefully they adapt and don't stay so sore over time. Its been nice being out in the fresh air and the weather is getting super nice here in VA especially in the morning before it gets warm out. Have a good day everyone!

My day off was Friday instead of Monday Memorial Day. The best thing about biking in this morning was the extremely low amount of traffic. I saw fewer cars on the whole 14 miles than I normally see in the first 2 miles.
About 68F with pretty high humidity and overcast skies this morning. |
It was a mild 16C/61F but it felt cooler. Actually, it felt as if I was not cycling but riding my bike through water, the air seemed so thick with humidity (I just checked it and it was 88%).
Here in Canada, it is Bike to Work Day and on Wednesday, the Ontario legislature (in 2015) proclaimed June to be Bike Month through the https://www.ontario.ca/laws/statute/s15016 |
Not good, yesterday and today I took my vehicle. I will not be able to commute by bike again until tomorrow!
|
67 degrees and humid this morning, and the sun was up. My load has gotten lighter. I wore only a short sleeve jersey for the first time this year. May was a wet and cool month here in the mid-Atlantic, now we're settling in for the summer cooker...
|
Cool starting out but warmed up after a few hills! Got going later and met another cyclist haven't seen before. Rode the Trek despite chance for rain.. got lucky last night!

Nice morning ride at about 68F. I left early enough to hit 15 miles. Yesterday was upper 80s for the ride home and today appears to be the same.
This morning I was rolling up to a 3-way stop. A wide-load semi was already there and going before I was close. Behind it was a car with a mom and daughter. There were no other cars, so she decided to roll on through the stop sign behind the semi only half looking at me. I had anticipated she might do that. Not sure what her hurry was though because she wasn't going to gain much with that slow moving semi in front of her. |
The forecast last night said it would be 12C/54F but it was a bit cooler this morning at 9C/48F and I'm glad I wore my merino shirt under my short-sleeved jersey. It also is much windier than the current forecast says, 18kmh/11mph, I know it was more than that, I had to pedal into it.
It was a nice ride anyway. |
First unofficial day of summer. And, it felt like it. Warm, light winds, no school buses, and reasonably light traffic as a result of school being out. Perfect time of year for bicycle commuting. :)
One odd observation. All the cycle commuters I ran across were wearing jackets. It was 65 degrees out there. What the hell is wrong with people? It was perfect shorts and T shirt weather. Oh, I almost got run over by a bulldozer. But, that's a story for a different day. |

Did the short commute today and carpooled with The Better Half. Had a 50 miles ride yesterday and did not feel like riding from home (plus, I am fairly certain I need to replace the bb on the Peugeot and have been too lazy to do it). The sun wasn't out, and temps were pleasant but boy was it muggy. I decided I needed a coffee stop on the way to work, so I thought I would skip one of the bigger hills by going a little bit out of my way. Nope, I just ended up on an even steeper hill. At least it helped burn off the brownie I had ($5 min purchase to use a credit card at the coffee shop). I'll have to keep trying alternate routes. It's all part of the fun!
|
No commute today, due to my 53 mile club ride yesterday with way more climbing than I'm used to, which has left me sore all over today. Meh, hate climbing.

Really nice commute in today. Was 70F and balmy. I did the full ride in from home since I didn't ride at all on the holiday weekend. Was a bit late into work due to getting a rear flat in Berkley Heights. Also two spokes came loose on the rear wheel so needed to tighten them up. I recently bought a Park TM-1 but have been lazy to use it on this wheel yet. Have heard that some folks use some sort of light lubricant on the TM-1 to ensure that it moves smoothly. Well, at least folks like myself that don't use it as often as a bike shop or wheel builder would. Do you guys do the same?

Oh, I almost got run over by a bulldozer. But, that's a story for a different day. I do not understand what people wear a majority of the time. You should see some of the get ups a certain group of people tend to wear to avoid the sun here in Vancouver. That being said I have always worn earflaps/headband, even in the summer. I have sensitive ears and I dislike the wind in them, plus it absorbs some sweat and keeps it out of my eye. Sunday morning I stepped outside to get going for the day. I was in a tee-shirt and jeans and I said, "Ohh it is rather pleasant out here." Ten seconds later my wife steps out, gives me a cock eyed look, states that it is freezing, and returns to the house. a minute later she comes out with a down vest, jacket, and winter hat?! Yikes, bulldozer? Construction trucks are bad. Presumably you are okay? |
Yeah I wear my Halo skullcap year round. I find that my head actually feels cooler with the cap on under my helmet, in the summer. I guess it's because of the wicking properties, but my main use for it is to keep sweat out of my eyes. It's a major problem for me if I don't use it.

The weather was pleasant today, and I stopped at one of the two traffic signals on my route and noticed not one but two other guys on bicycles. They may or may not have been commuters, but I was so surprised to find some many others out riding when I rarely see anyone else riding.
|
The commute in this morning was very nice, I left early enough so the longer ride was doable. The temp was 57f degrees with the sun coming up and clear skies.
|
Humid! Left late and a train blocking traffic but still made it with plenty of time to spare. Think I'll go with sandals tomorrow.
|
Great mornings for riding the fast bike, and I've even shifted to an hour earlier to take advantage of the longer days. New shifters, only Claris level but I can't fault the shifting and that's all that really matters to me. I've also been testing out my aero handlebar bag, perfecting the hook and brace arrangement. I think it's a keeper.
I'm seeing fewer than usual bikes which surprises me since this is the best time of the year for it as far as I'm concerned. Only one this morning, and he probably wasn't commuting. Maybe it's partly the earlier hour. but it seems like a drop-off even at the regular times. |
Great ride this morning 62F and dry. I have had a great month of riding. I rode every day in the month of May! I had my highest total EVER for riding. 740.3 ! Loving it.
|
I rode home yesterday with one eye on the sky as some dark clouds were trying to form above me. I never had more than a sprinkle hit me and never heard any thunder, but once home I looked at the radar and there was a few storm cells around. It just never got to me.
Nice ride this morning. Although I left early enough, I mucked around a bit and ended up cutting it close. At one point I looked at the time and realized I wasn't where I usually am at that time and so picked it up a bit. I got to work okay, but a little sweatier than normal. |
Another enjoyable day! Another coffeeshop day. Carpooled with The Better Half again (I was a bit too lazy to want to get the bike out of her car when we got home last night...carpooling again seemed easier). On the ride back from the coffee shop I took a different route, still encountered a big hill. Not as steep as yesterday, but steep enough where I had to work to get up the hill, and it was longer. C'est la vie.

Consecutive commute number 76.
Rode the fixed gear today even though the forecast is for a lot of wind. I fought the wind on the way to work and my hope is that it doesn't shift and I get to enjoy the push on the way home. Working at a client's office today. They have an area in the basement where they allow bikes to get parked. I've noticed that over the last month it's been getting more and more crowded (which is a good thing, I guess.) At a premium is the limited wall space where we could lean bikes that don't have a kick-stand. This morning I arrived to find they had installed a hanging rack on this wall that will hold five or six bikes. So I was pretty excited to try that out. How much of a bike nerd am I to get excited about a new rack? |
