HA! You're correct it's a polo shirt, polo shirts are much warmer than T-shirts; especially when temps are below 0F. Oh and that's likely a thermal ball cap too.

My record coldest commute was 9F. My commute is ~3miles; I wouldn't ride in that weather much colder than that.

Right now I'm trying to decide if I'll ride to an event tomorrow evening, when it will be in the mid 20s and windy, 10 miles one way, and 13 coming back.

Today it was single digits with wind chill, going into the wind I wished for some proper face gear.

Not to mention a thinsulate-lined cup

2F air temp, -14F wind chill.

Yeah, re: that game - the Seahawks didn't win. The Vikings lost.

I have ridden in the mid 30s. It just really doesn't get colder than that in winter here. I don't know what I'll do when/if I move back to Michigan. I'm freezing when it's under 60...

Today was -10C with wind chill feels like -14C.

Feb 2015, I've ridden in -27C. Don't know the wind chill though. I remember stopping by a grocery story to do an errand. Had to take my gloves off to lock and unlock. Those few seconds nearly frostbit my fingers. Took a few days before the pain in the fingertips went away.

When it's January in South Dakota and the gentle breezes blow,
About 72 miles an hour and it's 52 below.
You can tell you're in South Dakota 'cause the snow is up to your gut,
You take a breath of fresh crisp air and your nostrils both freeze shut.
The weather here is wonderful so I guess I'll hang around,
I could never leave South Dakota; my feet are frozen to the ground.

That's -14F wind chill for people standing still. How much factoring in your bicycle-borne airspeed?

It makes a lot of difference. I have to dress warmer for a winter bike ride than I do for a winter run. The silver lining (I guess) is that it's harder to go fast in the winter.

1/13/2016: 2°F, wind chill of -10°F, beating the old record of 7°F set yesterday.

RidingMatthew 01-13-16 03:22 PM

I saw 20.8F on my GPS at one point this morning. (not sure of wind chill) I will have to check the data but I think that might be coldest so far.

Edit: 19.4ºF is the lowest and it might be my limit

noglider 01-13-16 03:54 PM

I've ridden in 8ºF on the thermometer, which is less with wind chill. It gets pretty darned windy here, and I commute along the river, which makes the temperature and wind even worse. I'm pushing my limit to see if I can go farther. Since I started this job, it's been challenging, because it's a 14-mile distance, each way. I have to prepare very well, or I'll incur a lot of pain.

irwin7638 01-14-16 04:50 AM

-17F thermometer reading -32F reported windchill. Not the best decision I have made. The interesting and scary point was that I could not tell the difference between that and 0 degree temp.

For some reason, I got the bright idea to start commuting by bike in the midst of winter last year. Incidentally, riding the 8 miles to work that day was the first time I had ridden my bike more than 2 miles, and it was only 25F. I got a few single digits last year, and I've had two this year (I'm counting 9.8F single digits... Both days were the same according to both my thermometers). My rear brake cable was frozen on Tuesday, took some hard pulling on the lever to get it to work. It was kind of weird.
