Penn Station to Columbia U on Bike?

New Yorkers!

I'll be taking my bike on nj trans from Philly today. How long should I give myself to ride to Columbia from Penn Station? I go at the speed of the average messenger. Should I take amsterdam ave? Or is there a better route?

Thanks!

You might be better off taking Broadway and switching to Central Park West at 59th Street (at Columbus Circle). From there cut across on 110th. I would recommend this way even though it's a bit longer because you can safely run red lights on CPW since they're mostly T intersections with the bike lane on the top of the intersection. You also get the added bonus of watching pretty girls jog by Total trip is going to be in the 4 1/2mi range, give yourself 30-45mins just to be safe, traffic can be a pain and there are still several redlights i would recommend stopping at for safety.

Yeah, that's pretty good advice, IMO.

So broadway the wrong way for 30 or so blocks? or was that "not taking broadway" I would say, besides being annoying to everyone, riding the wrong way would slow you down.
west side path to 94 to riverside gets you to 116 or 120 with no traffic in the morning. Or 6th ave to 59 to cpw or use the park to 72 or 110.

Uh... you do NOT want to take broadway going uptown since it's one way downtown.
My gf attended columbia U and we made a few trips from her house in brooklyn all the way up there. The safe way is to head west to the west side bike path then travel up to riverside, take that hill that goes out of the park, it leaves you right at the entrance of the main square at columbia on the west side of campus.
Or you can take the quick way and take central park west, you can run pretty much all the lights (as someone said) on the way up plus draft the cars. I think there are 2 small steep hills near the end. It leaves you on the east side of campus.

At messenger pace, give yourself 20-25 min. If you push around 20-25mph, you can make it in 15 min or so.

actually best is to head west from penn station to the west side greenway, take it all the way up to 119th st and columbia. simple, quick, safe and pretty.

oh, for the love of... I totally forgot B'way was one way the wrong way south of Columbus Circle. Complete brain freeze, and i apologize. I didn't recommend the West side path because in the middle of a nice day (like yesterday) it's a pedestrian nightmare, and can be very frustrating to get around on. I shall no longer dispense advice on getting around in Manhattan until i have completely memorized the road map, and street directions! This includes everything south of Houston (which at least i know is pronounced House-ton!)
