If you wear helmet when bike commuting, what type of helmet do you wear? (The so-called commuter helmets are said to have a rounded shape (though I wonder why so).)

Some people may wear different types of helmets at different times, and sometimes commute without a helmet, so the poll allows multiple answers.

(This is only for the helmet you wear when bike commuting, not when racing, etc..

I wear a Nishiki Soccoro, which is just a basic bike helmet from a sporting goods store. I used to wear a commuter helmet, but then I got swiped by a car and bonked my hemet on the driver's passenger side window. It seems work fine, and accommodates for my pony tail. Plus it was much more cost effective for me at the time.

Curious to see what helmets the more experienced riders wear!

I don't know the difference between helmets. I wear a basic Bell helmet, I guess what you'd call a "Road" helmet, but it's the same kind I wear for touring and the same kind I wore when mountain biking. Not sure what you're trying to get at here. Is there a certain type of helmet the companies are now trying to push on us as "Commuting" helmets? It figures.

Anyway, I think a better question for your poll might be "Do you wear a commuter helmet?"

They're a rounder helmet, like a skater helmet, and sometimes has a visor. Some advertise that you can wear a hat under it.

I'm not sure how you quantify a road vs commuter helmet.

I'm currently using a Bell branded helmet, so I voted "commuter". It came with blinky lights integrated in the straps, and I've added a headlamp.

I've used a snowboard helmet, but it gets HOT, so it is only good for sub 30 weather.

I did not know there was such a thing as a "commuter helmet", although after seeing the above picture and reading replies, I have seen them, just thought they were a multi-sport kind of helmet. in any case I voted road which is what I wear.

When I ride to school (almost no traffic, mostly on bike paths) I wear a cheap Tesco helmet (will upgrade to a fluorescent-yellow one soon) because I leave it outside wit the bike and don't want to lose a lot of money if they (bike + helmet) get stolen.

Road cycling helmets are those geeky aerodynamic ones with lots of vents. Most Nutcase helmets are, I think, what they call 'commuter helmets'.

i wear a road helmet when it is warm. i wear my 661 Dirt lid when it is cold. is it a commuter helmet or a mountain bike helmet or ...? for me it is a commuter helmet.

I bought my Nutcase purely for its watermelon pattern. I have a theory that it defuses road rage - that for the half-second of their attention, people think to themselves "haha watermelon" rather than "smug damn bike" and then they're gone. But of course I can't confirm that. I can tell you that people tell me all the time that they like it.

Years ago, one of those padded leather/vinyl things that looked really cool on Eddy Merckx, but looked like an upside down S&M jock strap worn on anyone else's head. No idea if it actually might have helped -- my only crash while wearing it was during a crit and I slid sideways, no head impact but some painful road rash.


Later, a plastic shell multi-sport helmet, one of those things sold for hockey, field hockey, lacrosse, etc. It had foam rubber padding. Probably not a great bike helmet, but this was before Bell had bicycling helmets.


Now I wear a Bell road helmet.


Thinking about a Nutcase melon topper, after reading this thread and perusing their catalog.

I just bought an S3. I was in the shop and saw it on the shelf and said to the guy, "Hey, that looks a lot like my old S-Works from 2012. I loved that helmet."

Yeah, because it's basically the same exact helmet, it's just down 3 rungs and half the price of the new S-Works.

I use the Bern Alston. I voted commuter. I was skeptical of it at first, thinking I would only use it when it was cooler out, but I used it every day in Southern Missouri last Summer with temperatures in the high 90's and low 100's. It was better than the Bell Sweep I had been using. Its large vents kept the top of my head dry, the only place where sweat remained was where the headband hit. I could feel the air flowing over my head. I love that helmet.
