Posted on CL, Tell me what you know about this bike please. Is it worth $50 as a beater? Thanks
|
I look at it as, "How much money do I have to put into it to make it safely rideable?" and "How often do I have to ride it to make the total cost worth it?". If that bike looked workable, I'd invest $50 to have a spare for when friends visit, or to have a bike I'm not worried about locking up outside at the library.
But then, I'm a relative newbie. Lots of experienced riders here seem to hold out for the optimal outcome. They'll tell you the bike is too heavy, too slow, too old or too something. If I did own the bike, and had to get rid of one, this would probably be the first to go. But I'd have had the use of it for $50. |
If it was in complete rideable condition it would be worth it as a beater. If you need to start replacing things to make it work other than a tube, then no.

If it is ready to go, sure! If it needs work, no. If you do get it, take it to your local co op (if you have one) and get some help overhauling the hubs, bottom bracket and headset. That should keep you set for quite a long while. IMO, any old steel bike that is in ready-to-ride condition is worth at least a hundred bucks to someone.

Thank You guys, It is tuned up road worthy and ready to go I think. my commute is 1.5 miles to my carpool, so it can handle it for now I think but no big deal otherwise. I was just hoping and curious if somebody knows this bike, maybe have had one and/or could tell me more. I think maybe il post this in another more apropriate forum. appreciate all the responses guys. Thank You
