Good urban breathable non-clipless shoe?
 

I just got a pair of Moab Ventilators *again* - this has to be my fourth or fifth pair - and while I like them for commuting, hiking and walking - I wouldn't mind getting something less hot foot - even though these say breathable - they pretty hot and it's not even summer yet.

ECCO makes a lot of flat, low-heel, smooth-sole sporting shoes with replaceable inserts for better arch support...

I do too, and they stick very well to the studs in my pedals. They never slip. I did an entire tour with a pair of their Off-Roads.

I have a pair of Merrell sneakers that are almost totally ventilated, though they don't look it at first glance. I actually didn't even realize it when I was buying them. But they're very comfortable and breathable.

Keen sandals for me. Works well, good thick sole on the bottom.

I always found Salomon to be very breathable.

Where are you located? How long is your commute?

I've gotten really hooked on Chrome Shoes. They make several different styles for cleats and without cleats.
I currently have three pair and use one of them almost all the time. They last years under daily use.

I just got a pair of outdoor shoes (Lippi Pangue), they're comfy, relatively stiff sole and breathable. My favorite feature is that these don't use shoelaces, but an elastic closure, no more laces getting caught up in the crankset, yay!

I second Chrome Industries shoes. I commute daily here in San Antonio where the summers can be pretty brutal. Chrome shoes have worked very well in the heat and is extremely durable. You will pay a pretty penny though, but I think it's worth it considering how much use you will get. Also they are nice enough that sometimes I wear them with my work attire in a corporate setting.

some walking shoes have very good ventilation i have some scetchers they are about $60 though.

My cyclo-commuting shoes are Etnies Jameison 2 Eco skate shoes. Kinda wish they were waterproof but I only paid about $35 or so for the pair. It doesn't rain enough here to justify the cost of waterproof shoes for platform pedals. I rode them in the rain several times last year, but they only got really waterlogged once. Stuffing them with newspaper dried them out rather quickly.

Love my Crocs but they're too wide for pedaling, I don't like wearing sandals at work, and I don't like bringing extra footwear on my commute.

It's hard to beat an old pair of running shoes, and the price is right. And in most situations, they're socially acceptable.
Want stiffness? Superfeet make a difference.

a cheap pair of skateboard shoes with rigid soles, slip on style. Cheap. At Big 5

Cheap skateboard shoes from Big Five ($22 out the door). They have stiff, sticky soles and work very well with my Wellgo platform pedals.
