What's your favorite grips or bar tape?

On my drop bar bikes I've tried a few bar tapes, all of the foam type, and so far they've all seemed about the same to me. The finish is different but that doesn't seem to matter much once you've got your weight on it, they've all been about the same thickness and durometer. I haven't tried leather or cotton.

On my MTB I was pleased as punch to discover a little while back, when I needed to replace the grips, that WTB still makes the same ones I had before. I love these things, they're so simple and not gummy or gimmicky.

Grip: Ergon, GR3 on my Brompton M 3

Tape: (Off the Shelf); Fizik, with their undertape gel pads.

Also OK 2 layers of common foam tape .

the Gel striped are more a non slip than added padding, but, It does not stick to the metal,
like regular adhesive under a paper release tape strip, does.. & tape comes off easily, to re do.

I like Lizard Skin (both grip and tape), and so far my experience with fizik tape has been pretty positive - it's super tacky. If the bike is classy, I love me some Brooks. Fabric has some new tape coming out that 100% silicon that feels pretty awesome

Ergon GP1 Biokork.

I've never been a big fan of cork tape. I don't like the feel, or thickness. I tend to prefer polymer and polyurethane-based tapes. Fizik Microtex was great, especially when it only came in one variety. That was a lot less confusing. These days it often seems to end up thicker than I like, but the thin version is still good stuff. The thinnest version of Lizard Skins is decent, too. The thicker stuff is no good. My current favorite is probably Arundel Gecko, but it's not usually in stock at my local shop. I was also a fan of Bike Ribbon Eleganza, but they don't make it anything but black or black and white anymore, and I never use black tape.

What don't you like about the thicker Lizard Skins? I have I think the medium thickness...and it still looks and feels new after 2 years.

I was skeptic about the Ergon type grips, but tried them and they are the most comfortable for me. For tape, cork.

Darth Lefty 04-22-16 01:49 PM

So why would you want grips to be tacky? I don't understand the appeal.

Steely Dan 04-22-16 03:20 PM

for flat bars, i'm a die-hard Ergon convert. so damn comfortable.

for drop bars, i'm much less picky, any old synthetic tape will do.

Too tacky (as in feel, not taste) and doesn't wrap well. And I found it got grimy.

Any kind of lock on grip! Lock on grips and pop top stems are just behind the GPS and the Internet as the most significant inventions of all time.

Another fan of Ergon grips here.

I discovered that for me quality hockey tape works really well on my drop bars. I use Renfrew Tape made in Renfrew, Ontario, Canada. It lasts and it doesn't get gummy in South-Central Ontario, Canada summers. The tape is thin which is good as I have short fingers for the width of my hands. The tape holds up very well.

Cheers

Ergon GP1 grips on flat bars. In conjunction with tape wrapped bar ends on straight bars. I wrap the bar ends with old inner tube first, then cork tape on top. Very comfortable, dampens most vibration.

Currently have Cinelli, Andel, and SRAM cork tape on my bikes with drops. I prefer the cork type tape. All three of these brands work well for me.

Dave Cutter 04-24-16 08:18 AM

I like the plain old cheap cork bar tape. It isn't (and doesn't get) slick nor does it feel tacky or collect grime. To my hands... it just feels right. I order it on-line from China. Plain cork tape is available in a wide variety of colors. It cost nearly nothing and can be replaced anything it gets damaged.

wolfchild 04-24-16 08:46 AM

I use an old inner tube to wrap my bull horns...On my flat bars and riser bars I use lock on grips.

RubeRad 04-25-16 01:19 PM

I only use the very cheapest, most generic bar tape from eBay. I beef it up with an underwrap of old innertube on the tops of my drop bars.

For flat bars, I have always had fond childhood memories of 'mushroom' bmx grips. I've put them on some of my kids' bikes, but never actually used them as an adult, to find out if they're as good as I remember.

Nope, but go for it ... you first.. I just bought the regular black & Grey Ergon... double grip shift is only made that version
the Others Rohloff grip shift, use a short right but a standard left , but my grip bell takes up space on the left.

Ergon grips and saddle. GC1 BioKork on my Jones bars, GP1 BioKork on my much less swept back fat bike bars. I use whatever tape is on sale for my road bar drops and my Jones bars. I ride Ergon saddles on my road and fat bikes.

kego 11-11-17 02:28 PM

Hi,

Bought this SR Manu Becoz grips. Grip comes with 3 different lengths so no need to mess with cutting. Fits 100% with one ring exactly to Brompgon handlebar (kept two rings and seals for future use)

Feel is good as well, it has a mix of cork and synthetic rubber. Only odd thing is that it comes with non-std starheaded screw (dunno the technical name) and normal allen keys do not fit.

Good job for the money...

cinelli cork tape makes me very happy but i am going to try some deda tape soon when my son gets his order in.

blackieoneshot 11-11-17 08:05 PM

Black Cinelli cork tape.

Sullalto 11-12-17 07:36 AM

Haven't tried any different tapes. But I love ergon grips for flat bars. I with I could put them on the tops of my road handlebars.
