You need to go 9-speed to fill in that glaring gap in your gearing. ;)

While riding today, I was thinking how my bike is faster because it goes up to 11, whereas yours only goes up to 10.

I was thinking today, and today was the first time on my commute that I used 4 different gears - I went a little nuts down a hill, and pulled out the 52:14. A 50T front 1x5 with 14-28 would probably do me just fine (I obviously don't have much for hills)

Yes, orange bikes rock!

What crank is that on your bike and did it come standard with the trouser guard?

Darth Lefty 06-08-16 01:43 PM

I just noticed that Microshift offers 1x STI-style and SIS-compatible shifters in 7, 8, and 9 speed.

microSHIFT -The best control system

RubeRad 06-08-16 01:56 PM

Retroshift (aka Gevenalle) offer 1x options, and the shifters they use are rebranded from Microshift (except for AUDAX which uses Dia-Compe friction levers)

The crank is the original "Shammox 2 piece" or something like that, with the original 46t bashguard with a swapped out 42t ring. I have since replaced the guard with one of 42t size. Now I wonder if the extra coverage of the slightly larger guard (as pictured) wasn't better.

Just now I was fussing with the triple FD indexing on the front of my cross commuter and thinking how nice it would be not to. I don't think I'll change this one - it's not time for a project. But man, it would fine with me never to do that again.

AlmostTrick 06-13-16 06:28 PM

I had two different bikes with triples and never had an issue with shifting... Both bikes shifted quickly, smoothly, and consistently.

It was after realizing that the middle 42t ring on my 3x8 bike was easily covering pretty much everything, that I decided to go single on the next bike.

I seriously think that for most cyclists there is very little need for more than one chainring.

My first bike was a single speed (1960). Then in 1971 got a 1x5 Schwinn Suburban, current favorite bike is a 1x10 Gunnar - pic attached. With current crop of cassettes and hubs, hard to beat a 1xN for most utility riding.

Does this count? 1 x 3 x 7? 3 speed hub and 7 speed derailleur on the back wheel.

Of course that counts! That's actually a pretty cool setup. Do you have any pictures of how you have your shifters set up?

It's kind of a shame that Shimano is killing triples just as they are introducing electronic shifting. Triples with friction shifting were basically worry free. Triples with index shifting are a distinct step backward. Triples with electronic shifting could be flawless.

I personally don't want electronic shifting, but I'm also happy to futz with the cable tension to get an indexed triple to work, so I may be outside the norm.

Indexing for front shifting is (IMO) pointless, given how relatively rare it is and how it needs to trim to accommodate rear shifting

I don't have a pic right now. But i I have two standard grip shifters. 3 speed shifter on the left grip and 7 speed shifter on the right grip. This is the original set up for the Fichtel & Sachs 3x7.
Fichtel & Sachs was bought by SRAM some years ago and they still manufacture a similar setup now called the SRAM dual drive. I think the new shifter is now in one handle like this 3 x 9:

I love the setup because it allows me to shift while stopped.

Do I offend? I like to share pictures and I like to see other people's pictures so I started this thread (and many others).

If you don't like pictures, avert your eyes. More pictures, please.

AlmostTrick 06-15-16 10:29 AM

I like the picture threads. It's only "showing off" if you have fancy high dollar stuff and can't stop posting it all over the place.

Maybe almost 18,000 posts in 6 years is showing off? :p It's all good. :)

Yeah, there should be a dollar limit to bikes that are posted here. If it's over a grand, keep it to yourself.

Darth Lefty 06-15-16 11:59 AM

But how could you build a $1000 bike around a $300 SRAM cassette? :-D

That probably rules out fietsbob's Brompton. It's too bad. I would have liked to have seen it.
