Keeping The Cell Phone Dry
 

On the way home last night, I ran into a very bad rainstorm. My question is this, is there some thing to keep my phone from getting wet? I don't want to upgrade to new one as my old, back-up phone works great for occasional use.

I used the bigger ones and put my phone, wallet, and keys into it.

If you just put your cell phone in a zip lock as suggested you can still use it, touch screen and making calls all work fine. Thats how I do it in my kayak.

I always have poop bags for my dog right next to the door - they work great for cell phones... keeping them dry that is... not for actually using them.

Just don't accidentally... :eek:

Ziploc work wonders, and yes you can still use it through the bag. If my phone goes in my jersey pocket and there is any chance of rain, it is in a Ziploc for sure.

Unless you have one of these new-fangled gargantuan tablet-sized phones, the "snack" sized ziplocs perfectly fit a phone.

I use one of these. I play MP3s during my commute, and I can hear the music through the fully-closed holder. The holder does muffle the volume, but not so much that it bothers me. I could also connect earphones, and close the zipper around the earphone cable.

I pull over and pull the rain cover over the rack trunk bag.

I also always have at least a plastic shopping bag and a large ziplock in the bottom of the bag. They take up ZERO room and are handy if I have something wet/nasty that I need to put in the bag and I don't want to get onto other stuff in there.

Heavy duty freezer type ziplocks with the external zipper -- easier to manage with cold, wet hands. Usually the touch screen still works through the bag. I use these for my compact camera too, inside my non-waterproof handlebar bag.

Go for the ziplock bag.

The simple solution usually works best...

Ziploc baggie. Or two in case the first one gets a small tear or puncture.

Yeah, the "freezer" ones are a little thicker as well so I use those.

Kyocera Hydro Icon on FreedomPOP's free service. Waterproof to 1 meter. Cost me about $60 total, since I had to buy one month of the regular plan to get the phone. 200 minutes and 200MB data, with $15 fee for going over that. Just keep the data turned off on that one, and it's perfectly happy to ride in the handlebar mount during a downpour. Plenty of minutes for emergencies, and enough data to pull a map if I'm lost.

Add me to the "snack size ziplock" crowd. Completely non-tech solution. You can get 150 cell phone rain covers for $3.

And on days it's not raining I can use them to bring extra "goodies" home from the break room office. :thumb:

LifeProof Case, not as inexpensive as a Ziplock bag, but is not only completely waterproof, but provides excellent protection from drops and damage to the glass. Recently I was stopped at a light on my bike and while taking a drink of water, I dropped my water bottle. When I leaned over to pick it up my phone fell out of my back pocket, without any damage. The phone would definitely not have faired so well unprotected. In the last week a couple of co-workers have had to replace their phones because of water submersion and drops. As expensive as these phones are, I fail to understand why more people, especially active people do not have a protective case, it seems like cheap insurance.

I wear my phone on a belt holster, which works because I wear coaces shorts with a belt when I ride. When it rains I put a baggie over it and the holster and zip it down as far as it will go. Has worked for years with no problems. DItto Freezer bags.

Ziploc or put it in my Ortlieb waterproof panniers :)

Ditto this. I keep several sizes of bags in my trunk bag for this purpose (1 each of larger sizes for other items I may have in the trunk bag). Snack sized is best for smartphones because then you don't have to fold the bag back behind the phone before putting it in your jersey pocket. And like others have said, touch screen capability is retained.

There is absolutely no need for those "dry bag" things, or other similarly overpriced plastic bag options.

I used ziploc bags for years, until a small hole and a large rainstorm conspired to fill the bag with water. So much for cheap. Now I use a solid case - WITZ Waterproof Smartphone Locker II for $13.

zip lock bags work very well. I now use a QuadLock case and bike mount and it comes with a "poncho" you slip over the top that makes it impervious to rain. Another thing you could do is put it in one of your bags. A bit of rain won't kill most phones these days.
