Lunch time commutes
I don't think I remember this being covered in the same way before, but share your lunchtime/coffee break rides! Let's see some pictures, read some descriptions and hear some stories of that midday fun ride.

Today over lunch hour I biked to the drug store to pick up a prescription. The lady at the drive-through pharmacy window always chuckles when I pull up.
On my way to the store the Google streetview camera passed me, so I guess at some point I may show up on there. Does anybody know how long after they pass that the captured images get online?

I'll go first, with the ride I just took today. I had to go to the bank and deposit some cash (treated myself to some bike stuff and had to put some of my bike fund cash into the checking account to appease the wife), and as I hadn't eaten yet I decided I would ride out somewhere for lunch. For those who are not familiar, Columbia, SC is a small, though not very well connected small city. At least not for any mode of transportation that doesn't have a motor. It's getting better, the county has a penny tax program that goes toward infrastructure improvement, and one of our latest and greatest is a new section of a rails to trails greenway through the downtown area.
I work in an area that is a Arts and Entertainment district called The Vista. My company bought the building we are in when it was mostly empty warehouses and torn up streets well over 15 years ago. There are lots of places to eat within a 3 minute walk but sometimes you just gotta get out to a different part of the city. There is a somewhat new-ish restaurant to the north called The War Mouth that I have been wanting to check out, and better still, the newest section of the Vista Greenway that just opened last week would get me 80% there!
It starts out one block over and one block down from my office and goes through an old RR tunnel under a gridded area
Previously, where this tunnel ended, so did the greenway. You could cross the street and ride in the adjacent park. I tried it once, and discovered that while there was a nice paved path there was no way out of the park that did not include walking up a number of stairs or cutting it off road and making for the streets. Now there is a newly paved path as part of the greenway that goes around and allows you to ride through to the other side and keep on going.
And just like that, I am out of the park and onto the rails to trails
It goes on for a little ways before terminating under a bridge, and from there it was just winding through residential streets to get to my lunch destination

We have a social/pick up ride here in Austin called the Hump Day Nooner.
Leaves the downtown area at 12PM on Wednesdays.
Jumped in on it a couple of times.
Or just tool around on my own….

My lunch time ride isn't really a ride but a commute extension...after riding to work and showering/dressing for work (I'm a doctor so shirt, tie, white coat etc) I see patients for the morning then I have to change buildings to one of our other offices. It's less than 1/2 mile but to minimize what clothes I have to change I put my ride-in sweaty clothes in a plastic bag with my cycling shoes and wear everything else plus a helmet. Dress shoes and speedplays is interesting and you can start to sweat faster that you'd believe in those 3-4 minutes...

I keep a fixed gear bike in my office, just in case. I also have a spare helmet and lock. To be honest, I've only used them two or three times so far, but it's still a nice thing.

I only get 30 minutes for lunch, so not a whole lot of time to get dressed and go for a ride. Since I rarely eat lunch but am required by law to take a 30 minute unpaid break, I've started doing speed-walking laps around our parking lot "loop" (calculated at .5 mile, I do around 6 laps before I go back to work).
