Happy Bike-to-Work Day!

To celebrate Bike-to-work day, I... biked to work! (as usual)..

I still have not seen any new commuters around Jax. FL.

Has anyone seen any new commuters on their way to work today?

milank 05-20-05 06:26 AM

(In Louisville, KY) I saw three apparently new commuters today. Although I've only been commuting for three weeks, so they may have been on vacation or something.

There was supposed to be some kind of rally downtown @7:30 but I was running late.

Grasschopper 05-20-05 06:29 AM

Less commuters today as it is raining cats and dogs. I had a bunch of people from work that were going to do it but no one did due to the rain. :(

khackney 05-20-05 06:49 AM

Funny how Bike-to-Work day ended up on National Rain Day. We've had thunderstorms all night and predicted to last all day today. NO Commuting for me... I just finished cleaning up my road bike from getting caught in a downpour last weekend. RAIN REALLY REALLY SUXXXXXX!!!!!

BraveSpear 05-20-05 07:09 AM

What a bunch of slackers ;)

I bike to work almost everyday: rain, sun, sleet, day, night, extreme heat, extreme cold (ok, maybe in Florida not something I deal with too often, but it got into the high teens this past winter, and this humid cold gets into your bones!), hurricane (yes, I rode to work last year when a hurricane was coming through Jax), lightning storms.. I've ridden through every type of weather except snow.

I guess I'm just a die-hard commuter.

I commute daily, but decided to participate in my employer's 'Bike to Work Day' ride. What a joke. They only communicated 'Bike to Work' to members of their 'Bike Club' (I'm not a member, nor do I plan to join). I had to hunt down the information to find out when and where etc. A total of seven people showed up. The gathering point was 2.5 miles from work (guess how many drove their bike to this location on the back of their car). Since these people where all club riders (except me) and riding RACING bikes (I was on my touring bike), on the ride they hardly dropped below 20mph.

This was my first (and only!) group ride ever. In the future, I'll keep riding in solitude like I always do.....

DogBoy 05-20-05 07:18 AM

I biked all week but not today. Have errands to run to get ready for the upcoming weekend that require the use of the truck (I don't think I can tow a 4000 lb boat/trailer on my bike). Today would have been much nicer to ride than yesterday....nothing like getting pelted by hail and getting soaked in a downpour.

FYI: water resistant IS NOT THE SAME as water proof!

I slept in. :) Good thing I did. The kids would not get out of bed until I ripped off their covers and play-spanked them, then tickled them until they actually put their feet on the floor. :)

I don't like riding in groups either. Too unpredictable.

nah man you live in florida.... go up to canada and commute everyday, then i'll call you die-hard :p

but seriously good for you! riding everyday (no matter where you live) takes more commitment than most people are willing to make... me included, i ride most days but will take off for extreme weather situations; like when our roads turn to ice.

I feel so guilty

its raining buckets here in DC
and today i took the metro

im going to catch s*** all day long from the other commuters in the office
and i know that they rode in... i already saw their soaking wet bikes out front

it felt wrong as soon as I set foot outside the door without my cleats on
O BIKE GODS !!! FORGIVE ME !!!!

bostontrevor 05-20-05 07:44 AM

It was a gorgeous day here. Sunny, warm but not too hot, traffic was extra heavy (I don't really know why--sort of depressingly ironic) so I got a good rush of thank-god-I'm-not-one-of-those-poor-bastardis. If I'd remembered it was the last day of bike week, I would have gone and grabbed breakfast. One of these years I'm going to be on the stick and cash in on the free eats during this week.

i had planned on biking to work today (no group ride or anything in my small town) but eneded up my kid still has a temp and daycare wont take him and the wife took off the last 2 or 3 days and is out of time off so im staying home today

Phantoj 05-20-05 07:57 AM

I biked to work for the first time today. It was very pleasant. 27 miles, which qualifies as a "Very Long Commute".

We had thunderstorms last night, but the streets were dry except for a few puddles. The temperature was temperate.

I may do it again next Friday... or I may take Friday off for Memorial Day. If I tried to commute every day, I'd quickly burn out.

wimp ;)
yea buddy, you've gotta earn that forgiveness....

I will admit, Memorial Bridge wasn't exactly enjoyable....neither was getting cut off by a soccer mom at the Pentagon.

You'd think people would be a bit more understanding......friction brakes + rain = I can't stop as fast as you can!!

I saw a few racers out and some kids heading to school but I think the Ozone warning kept most commuters caged today. Temperature is supposed to hit 107 this afternoon, glad I carpool home! We are supposed to hit 113 on Sunday :0

genec 05-20-05 10:33 AM

Started out foggy... but the sun is breaking through now... went out of my way to hit a Bike to Work rest area and got a T shirt. Lots of riders out there... I also made a point to wave to everyone I saw cycling.

eubi 05-20-05 10:55 AM

It was a nice ride in today. I've been slacking for the last couple months and I really miss riding.

Starting next week I start work at 5:00AM...even less cars then!

All you need is 5311's singlespeed setup, all you need to do is somehow reverse the gears so it's 11x53. That should handle it.

Maintaining my honor with my non-riding coworkers was my main motivation this morning (I admit it, I usually wimp out when it's raining hard in the morning). So today was a first of sorts for me. :) Plus they now KNOW I am nuts! :D

Glad I rode in - rain gear worked well enough (what I wanted to keep dry stayed dry). A freebie hotel shower cap worked as a helmet rain cover (until I stopped moving at then it got real sweaty!). Hoped the reduced turnout would help my odds at the prize drawing at the Reston "pit stop" but no such luck this year.

I was pleasantly surprised by the number of cyclists I did see on the trail this morning. And I feel my standing with the hard-core commuters at work has gone up a little.

halfbiked 05-20-05 11:32 AM

I took two wheels, but did not bicycle. My girlfriend however is making up for my slacking by convincing a co-worker to bike with her.

RonH 05-20-05 12:00 PM

I lead (astray ;) ) a group of 15-20 from Decatur to downtown Atlanta. The weather was perfect. Several in the group said today was their first bike commute. We were met by the wonderful folks from the downtown TMA with apples, oranges, bagels, and I think someone said juice, but I didn't see any.

I was supposed to do a bike safety presentation at the "Lunch on Broad" hosted by the downtown TMA but hard rain with lots of thunder moved in about 11:00 AM they cancelled.

I hope it's gone for the ride home. I still haven't bought fenders for my bike. :(

yea buddy, you've gotta earn that forgiveness....
and how do you sugest i appease said bike gods?
with what shall i make my sacrafice

i sure as hell am not stripping down to my boxers to pose for one of nyrie's shots

yeah..
so they're going to have to come up with something else

Hawkear 05-20-05 03:33 PM

Today I saw another biker going my direction. An older gentleman, who was probably retired (or on a day off) riding around.

I actually saw a few real commuters on Wednesday - one before the Ride of Silence (who wasn't headed there), and a dude on a folder with a bunch of gear for lights at the ride. In "Biketown" Irvine, there sure aren't a lot of bikers, and a whole heck of a lot of impatient SUV drivers. Yay for suburbia!

detrieux 05-20-05 04:39 PM

SE Ohio was a cloudy, cool day with a slight drizzle. BTW is the reason regardless of the weather. Could have been far worse.

dee-vee 05-20-05 04:54 PM

I saw allot of bikes on my way home at 3:30 but they mostly looked like recreational riders and not very commuterish.
