This guy has a crazy commute...

Okay, I lured you in, but it's not really a commute. It's the latest video of Scottish trials cyclist Danny MacAskill. He should have titled it something like "Heading Home From Work."

amazing, also fun & funny. even his outtakes weren't bad, great rider!

mcours2006 10-12-16 09:31 AM

Hm. I thought it was Ron Weasley on the Hogwarts Express.

alan s 10-12-16 09:49 AM

He is the best trials rider out there. Looks fun until you see how many times he fell.

Are they called trials riders because of all the trial and error they do?

He sure has some skills on a bike. Didn't he recently get hurt? I wonder if this new video is after he healed up, either way, he does some great stunt riding. I would be in a full body cast just for trying, lol

I think you're thinking of Martyn Ashton.

But yeah, I live 100% vicariously through these guys' videos, since there's no way I'd try any of it.

You have to wonder how many times did they get it wrong before they got it right!
Yeah, my body aches just watching, call it "phantom pains", for the impending doom that would happen tome if I tried any of those stunts. I'm glad to also live vicariously through his videos, all good stuff.

No way I'd do any jumping but I wouldn't mind having better skid skills. I work on it a little on the local gravel/chat trails and wet pavement, but still try to avoid slippery situations.

I think I hit that puddle once in June...

Just that first sideways downhill ten foot bunny hop onto the rail... that guy is amazing.

What's remarkable is how talented he is at falling. I'd be in the hospital after my second attempt on most of those. Some how we he goes bad, he still lands remarkably smoothly.

Trials refers to the motorcycle version of "(Observed) Trials" the objective of which is to navigate extremely difficult terrain without putting a foot down (dabs). It dates back to at least the 60's that I know of.

Here is another video of motorcycle trials.

Interesting. I wonder how long before you start seeing electric trials bikes based on e-fat bikes.

Looking around it looks like its already happening...

I remember watching the early trials runs way back when, but the athleticism of the more recent riders has really elevated the game.

RubeRad 10-17-16 12:59 PM

Fantasic!
Imaginate is still my favorite video like this, but this one's really cool too. Martyn Ashton has made some wonderful vids as well, so sad about his injury. I saw a thing on tv recently covering a downhill mtb race where for fun they let Ashton ride the course on an electric mtb with a custom seat he was able to be strapped into. He fell over sideways once, but the crowd immediately set him back upright and on he went.

Amazing he can do all this on something as heavy as a full-sus mtb (with dropper post!). Love to see in the outtakes how it's not as easy as the final cut makes it look.

When he's on top of the rolling haybale, the rear wheel is going backwards, why doesn't that force him to pedal backwards as well? I thought only special bmx axles allowed freewheel in both directions

The freehub is mounted on a BB axle, rather than the rear hub, allowing the bike to roll backward freely.

Darth Lefty 10-17-16 03:36 PM

That's a good catch. I can't quite picture Alan's answer.

At 3:40 when he does the backflip, he does pedal backward. I wonder if it's a different bike.

Korina 10-17-16 04:52 PM

Yeesh. Watching the outtakes of both Danny's vids remind me of every Jackie Chan movie ever. I winced. Awesome vids.

RubeRad 10-17-16 05:07 PM

Actually, in the outtakes, he did a great job of falling well, it didn't look like he ever got hurt at all.

I wonder if they brought in a backhoe to dig out that puddle. Hilarious stunt!
