Pants that fit over slim jeans?
 

Fellow commuters, after last week's rain soaked commutes in NYC I'm thinking about pants. I'm looking for some water resistant/proof pants that will fit over my slim jeans without getting too bulky and baggy for my modest two mile commute on a road bike. All recommendations appreciated. Thanks.

Marmot Precip shell pants might be a good solution - waterproof, breathable, very compact when stashed, and relatively inexpensive for a quality product.

Water proof usually translates to "doesn't breathe." You'll get wet, only it'll be from your own sweat versus rain. Spend a bit more for pants that feature breathability and you won't regret it.

Go to REI or similar store and look at the rain gear for backpackers.

Let me know if you find anything good. I'm in a nearly identical situation. I shopped around a while back, but everything seemed too heavy. I really just need shell pants for those few occasions where I get caught trying to get home or to work in heavy rain. I think I looked at a pair of Columbia pants that were similar to the Marmot Precip, and they had them for around $50 or so at the outlet.

I have a couple of pairs of Columbia rain pants. The better ones have a mesh inner liner, and a waterproof durable outer shell. I wear them over cycling tights or shorts. No problems with sweating or freezing when it's ~60 - 30°F. My commute is 6+ flat miles, in 30 - 40 minutes.

I also have inexpensive PVC rain gear, similar to that recommended by [MENTION=197614]fietsbob[/MENTION]. I'm more prone to sweat in that, but it keeps me dry even in heavy rain.

Best prices for Columbia and similar are the clearance sales for department stores and big box sporting goods stores, e.g. Kohl's and Dick's online.

Even rain pants made for Cycling dont hold up well being worn to Ride in , crotch seam tape peels off & the "breathable" coating comes Off the fabric..

& 3 layer stuff delaminates , thats Just how it Goes ..

Get a pair of jeans you like and wax them with Otter Wax or a similar product. It makes fabric highly water resistant, and yet much more breathable than most rain specific gear. It won't be as water proof as some stuff, but it will keep you pretty dry in most situations.

The axe could come in handy during some of my testier urban commutes. I'll need to find a lightweight version.

Have you tried this yourself? I might give this a whirl with paraffin on an old pair of jeans. I got a spare slow cooker I'm planning to grease a chain with paraffin in, wondering if painting on melted wax would be overkill....probably lol.

Also hot-wax for the hipster mustache....stings, but totally worth it.

Although, I generally just grab my ski powder pants and put them on over my reg pants as I already have them. They keep me warm and pretty much dry. Also, rain capes are popular in PNW area of US and many parts of Europe. Gaining popularity on the east coast as well.

Not on jeans, but on jackets and bags. It works!

Edit: as for painting on wax, that's almost what I do. I use the can of wax, not the bar. I soften it up by placing the can in hot water on the stove. Then I use a rag to wipe it into the fabric. After I cover a small area, I use a hot hair dryer to melt it in further. Then I let the whole thing cure for a couple days before wearing.

With discounts, they cost $22. They're cheap, they're simple, and they get the job done. I doubt they breath at all, but for a <15 min. ride it hardly matters. I don't intend to use them for anything much longer, except in a pinch. I used them in last week's torrential rains, and they worked just fine. I basically looked for the cheapest thing I could find. Sierra Trading Post items don't stay in stock for long, but a quick search for "rain pants" turned up similar for a similar price. I'm sure you could also find something like it on Amazon, etc. Basically a pants shaped plastic bag would do, so I didn't see the point in spending for anything technical, or bike specific. These are however roomy enough that you get some air, and don't feel like you're wrapped in Saran wrap.

The Legs Jacket is it. Can't wait until they're actually for sale.
