Icy

Here in Boulder we had a few inches of Snow with some Icy mess under it all. Anyone ride through Winter's Wild and White stuff this week?

This morning there was a little ice on the bridge going over the toll road. Avoided most of it and rode over what I couldn't. Other than that the roads are pretty clear.

We did get some snow earlier this week. I opted to drive on that day. I've been riding on studded tires this week just because of the low over night temps and moisture on the ground. Didn't want to take an chances, but I do hate riding on them on the trip home when it's warmer and sunny.

I biked to the dentist yesterday. My bridge was still icy and slick, so I carefully walked my bike over it, but after I got out of my driveway the roads were OK.

Frozen slush on my bridge this week also. Took over 35 min to walk the 1.8km bridge.

I guess riding that bridge would be too freaky in those conditions?

I put the studded tires on the commuter bike over a week ago, but have not done any commuting since.
Yesterday, I rode my grocery getter bike to the store, and almost wiped out twice. The studded tires are going on that one this morning.

I didn't so I walked. They're usually good about salting the bridge and we don't get snow very often. I did order a set of studded tires for fun though.

I tried sections but it's frozen slush with ruts mixed with glare ice. I'm not adventurous enough to attempt riding with slicks.

Hard to justify studded tires for the 3-5 days they'd be useful here, though I have thought about just waiting for the cheapest deal I can find, since the rubber would likely rot before I could wear out even the worst set when they're only getting ~50 miles a year.

No ice for me! When we get that kind of weather, the who city shuts down. There's no reason to go anywhere or do anything except get the fireplace going, enjoy the bonus day at home, cook up something good, and wait for it all to melt by 4 pm.

I think I'm going to check out the US36 Bike Path at noon.
This might be a mistake.
But dammit, a Strava buddy is 36 miles ahead of me for the year, and we are both within 100 miles of hitting 5000 miles for 2016.

I have the same kind of idea about getting winter bike shoes. Then I remember I'd use them no more than 10 days a year, probably closer to 3-5 days.

Yeah, insulated shoe covers are a lot easier to justify, since they're handy for cold rain too.

Plus uphill and downhill, I imagine so!. At less than half a km and flat I was lucky to get through something like that. Rutted ice underneath freezing slush and snow, I didn't realize what you guys go through until trying it one time.

One day it rained then got down to 0 degrees in a matter of hours. Every road was an ice rink. So frustrating not being able to ride fast and have to slow to a crawl at every corner. My 8 minute ride to work took 30 minutes. Had to make significant detours to avoid icy hills. I can do sub zero temps and snow, but ice I have no tolerance for.

Some freezing rain fell over night. My wife left with the car this morning. Five minutes later she called and said she was at the corner, attempting to turn back onto our street, but couldn't because the entire street, and in fact everything else, was covered wit about a cm of ice. We ended up leaving the car there until the salt trucks came through. Yeah, talk about icy.

Later in the day I took my Bianchi with the Marathon studs out for a quick spin. Got soaked from the rain, but stayed upright.

Yesterday was 33f and rain. My car has heated seats and steering, maybe if my bike had heated seats and steering... Nah. It was a very good day to stay inside. Today was about 20f and dry with patches of ice but really windy causing a lot of canceled flights at the airport. Fortunately it was a headwind going to the grocery and lunch and a tailwind coming home.
