I forgot to mention this one annoying driver yesterday morning. I was to the right of a car going through a green light going about the same speed, although I had been going faster and passing a few up until then. The car in front of us had on its right blinker, so I knew to not get up next to him. The driver must have been thinking I was going to try to pass him though because instead of making his turn, he stopped. The light was still green and there was not any other reason for him to stop. I braked and waved for him to go and he did. If I had tried to pass on the right and he turned into me, it would totally been my own fault. While I appreciate that he saw me and used caution, his unexpected stop was a surprise to me and the car behind him.
Not too bad this morning at about 39F. My right calf tightened up after an early morning run. Pedaling was definitely affected and I favored my left leg and avoided some hills because of it. Hopefully it will pass soon enough. |
Weather lied to us this morning. Was supposed to be about 24F, and I woke to discover it was 15F. Usually 20F is a point at which I change a few things in my gear (goggles instead of glasses, different socks) so I had to make some last minute adjustments. 20 miles planned for today. The weather was supposed to reach the low 30s by mid afternoon, but we'll see if that holds true.
But I was able to ride the hybrid and leave the dreaded studded tire bike in the garage, so it's all good. Had to ride across a few icy patches but I just made sure to cross them as straight as possible and didn't have any trouble. |
24F and 18mph winds. There was snow on the ground and freezing rain was supposed to have fallen overnight so I through on the studded tire front wheel. Silly me... totally unnecessary but I guess better safe than sorry. Not looking forward to 18+mph headwinds for the ride home.

Got an early start this morning, thought I'd get to see the sun coming over the ridge. No such luck; heavy clouds meant I got all the way to work, 30 minutes after "sunrise," and never saw the sun. Still, it was a good ride -- very light traffic and pleasant temps. There's supposed to be a stiff north wind kicking up that'll make the ride home interesting, as well as knocking the temperature down 15 degrees by tomorrow.

15cm/6" of snow overnight, -15C/5F, windy with forecast of another 10-15cm/4-6" through the day and a low of -23C/-9F tonight. Didn't commute by bike today but might take the bike out for some play time this evening if the wind has died and there's no snow coming down.
Remaining cold until Friday (low of -17C/1F Thursday night) where it will go up to a balmy -9C/16F but after tonight, no more snow forecast until Saturday so I'll try to bike it on Thursday and Friday of this week. Need one of these until then: http://www.backcountryrecumbentcycle...ull-Fat-11.jpg |

The clear photos were Wednesday. The fog was Thursday. The screenshot of light blue route was my route to town without a compass.
Thick fog on the water is eerie and scary (if you have no reference point). As for commuting, pretty normal here and I'm actually enjoying the cool temps. No sweat when I get to work! |

Here's hoping your need for Tegaderm is so low half of them dry up before you need them!
It was a good ride in today. Was ~48F with a very light rain in the beginning of the commute. You know I kept away from the white paint in CP this time... I brought a plastic bag to cover the seat since more rain was forcasted later on. Any day on the bike is a good one. Noticed that my cranks were creaking like hell this morning. Might need to pull off the arms the do a basic cleaning and spindle check. |

23F/-5C blustery and generally slow ride in.

The driver of a Volkswagen Beetle had about 15 to 20 seconds of waiting to pass which allowed him time to figure out how to express his feelings toward the cyclist on the road. But he wasn't just waiting patiently for a safe place to pass. Instead, he was honking at the car in front of him that was looking for a safe opportunity. Finally, a straight section of the road without oncoming cars appeared. The first car passes, closely followed by the Beetle. He put down his passenger window in the cold 25 degree morning so he could communicate clearly as he passed. "A$$HOLE!"

40F here in South Dakota, which in December is normally shorts and t-shirt weather.
Instead, it was raining and we had a wind advisory. Gusts were breaking 50 mph. Of course, I had to ride straight into it. The cool part of the ride was at the halfway point when I got to an intersection on the MUP I met up with a guy who I'd seen often but never talked to. We were going the same speed (slow because of the wind) and direction so we struck up a conversation and rode together for a couple miles until we reached my turn-off. Nice guy. |

I believe he was referring to himself. |
Coldest ride of the year so far, 15 degrees colder than yesterday. But the sun was shining, traffic was light, it's a beautiful day for a bike ride!

Had a good and uneventful commute into the city this morning. Was ~21F so was close to my limit. The wind while going down St Nicholas Ave was a bit brutal at a few points. But the balaklava and double socks helped as usual. Only real drawback is dressing up/down takes about 15 min with all the layers I'm putting on.
|
19 deg. as I pedaled away from home this morning at 6AM. I was plenty warm and dressed appropriately for the 11 mile ride but that wind from the west was a bit wicked!

That reminds me that I've seen a rash (well 2) of recumbents with fairings and windshields lately. In both cases the riders were just wearing jackets and seemed awfully comfortable. I'm thinking!!

Took the studded tire mountain bike today. I think I may have to be a bit more judicious in the use of this thing...MAN are those tires slow lol :(
|
Not as cold as yesterday and no Beetle drivers yelling at me today. A few twitchy squirrels that are good at doing u-turns on a dime.
I went for a run at 5am and saw what I thought was a shooting star. Then I saw more and remembered there was a meteor shower going on. I counted 7 short streaks of light over a 10 minute span. Just had to look it up though - Geminid Meteor Shower. |
Uneventful... they said it was COLD lol. I was sweating too much by the time I got to work. I guess no snowy commutes this year. Funny is it snowed in south before here.
