It's Friday, and I haven't ridden to work once this week. Yesterday we had a big snowfall, and my workplace closed. Today it's cold, and there is a lot of ice on the surface. Riding today would be suicidal.

We've been home with the babies for two work weeks now, and three to go. Our burn rate on diapers is astonishing. It's also weird to see the babies' dinky diapers next to the potty-training toddler's. The former baby is starting to seem enormous! We have settled into a "battle rhythm," as the management lingo has it, but my wife is terrified of me going back to work in a few more weeks.

Weather has been keeping us in. I got my kid out on his Strider and the dogs on a leash for a while yesterday. I haven't been on a bike in a month but that could change here pretty soon.

The other big local-ish weather news has been Oroville Dam which suffered a sinkhole under its spillway just as the flow rates are their highest since the 1997 flood. The bottom half of it is probably lost. The people in charge are hoping to keep it running rather than use an earthen emergency spillway which would cause a lot of erosion and break power lines. I think when my daughter was 9 months old I started taking her out for long (3+ hours) naps in the bike trailer. That's an infinite amount of time from where you are now of course...

that's about when I started the now-toddler. In hindsight a snuggler or a trailer with a better seat would have been preferable, he did a lot of uncomfy-looking slouching. 9mo from now will be November, of course... I don't get much commuting done in the dark and rain, much less recreational, and I want to get the by-then-3yo on skis, so I'll have to work the priorities.

I made it out on work release... a trip to the store for cookie ingredients and a dog's prescription.

Wow, that's some dedication! Quite an accomplishment.

This morning's ride here just west of Indy in Hendricks Co was wet. Kind of a light drizzle. Low visibility at 4 am. But warm, about 52 deg. Felt like I was riding through London with the wetness in the air. After 14 miles of this, I was a little wet. Was determined tô ride today after missing yesterday which was a beatiful warm day. Not the most enjoyable ride this morning but any day on the bike is good.

Light winds and a good temp, rough morning though. Only was able to ride Monday last week and the flu started Monday night. Nothing major just weak and extremely gassy stomach.

Back to the Monday. We hit 78 degrees yesterday and I saw a bunch of tulips blooming while out for a run.

48F this morning and a bit of tail wind in parts. But a good ride in!

After a weekend of temps near 60 it was 23F this morning. Anyone else noticed it's getting lighter sooner in the morning? Almost enough that I don't need a headlight

One of the great things about that is, you now know for certain that the weather there won't stop you. If you want to, you know that you can do it indefinitely.

When I first did it, I felt the pressure that last week, building to the last day, and then back to normal. Illogical, but real. Did you notice anything like that?

Took the train today since the roads were not clear from the freezing rain (or slushy mess) from yesterday. I expect to be back tomorrow barring any more crappy weather...

A little bit, but not overwhelming. I think it helped that the weather the last week was pretty easy. Temps ranged from 6°F to 52°F and we had some wind, but no precipitation. So it wasn't too hard to just keep riding.

Interestingly enough this morning, the work day after I hit the year mark, was a day when it would have been easier to drive. I had to help my son get a rather large presentation to his school which required my truck. After dropping he and the project off it would have been a lot easier to just drive another mile or so to the clients office. Instead I backtracked all the way home where I got on the bike and rode. Which proves I'm at least a little crazy. :lol:

Ride wasn't too bad. It rained all day Saturday, and yesterday was sunny and in the 30s which meant a lot of the accumulated snow melted off. Unfortunately the ground is still frozen solid so the melted snow had no where to go but in the street. When the temp dropped below freezing over night it caused quite a bit of the pavement to be a skating rink.

So even though it's supposed to be in the upper 40s for my ride home from work I had to ride the winter bike because there was no way I was going to make it without studded tires. This will probably be the story of the week as the snow accumulation melts off: sheet ice in on the way to work, and beautiful temps on the way home.

Windy this morning! Beating into a mean headwind some of the time, sailing along in silence at other times, with the wind blowing leaves along the road at the same speed as my bike. Almost got blown over a couple times, too. Last week's snow is now just piles of dirty ice at the edge of the road, some of them in very inopportune locations. And the roadway is full of debris, especially at the edges.

Colder today at about 30F for the ride in. But clear and sunny. I don't really need my headlight to see for either morning or evening trip.

It was a difficult ride home yesterday. The temperature was mild (-5C/23F), the snow on the paths was sloppy and thick and my studded, deep-tread winter tires were able to catch one layer of snow but slid on layers underneath. I ended up walking about 1/3 of the 4km/2.5mi route home. I don't know if a fat bike would have done much better, probably a bit better though, my tires are 47mm whereas 4" fatbike tires are 100mm and 4.8" are 120mm so there is a significant difference in width.

We're in that freeze/thaw part of the year so the mornings are very icy and the evenings are very wet with all the snow accumulation melting off.

Was definitely icy enough for studded tires this morning, but its soon going to get above freezing and I'm going to be riding across town at lunch, riding to meet my wife for a Valentine's dinner after work and then riding back across town to home. With all the miles I was going to log (and the forecasted wind) I didn't feel like fighting the slow winter bike all day so I opted to ride my hybrid.

No studs, so I went extra slow and careful over all the ice. Made it to work without crashing. By lunch time those ice patches should mostly be puddles of water.

Not unpleasant 35F with about a 10mph headwind. It felt like 100 - legs felt like rubber. I hate when that happens

Colder at 29F this morning. The road was pretty clear so decided to ride in. However found out that the GWB sidewalk was closed. Wah wah waaaaaaaah. :( So rode River Rd down to the Weehawken ferry and took that. If the sidewalk is still closed this afternoon, then I'll just take one of the buses at the uptown Port Authority to Fort Lee. Am kind of surprised that the sidewalk is not open since most of the roads are clear. Oh well....

I decided to push myself to ride today, since it's still wintery but a little nicer than yesterday. That worked out well. I wore low-rise boots instead of bike shoes, since my bike shoes are optimized for coolth. The tread on the boots is so wide that occasionally, they would rub against the crank. For a moment, I thought a squawking bird was following me, but then I noticed that he squawked at every turn of my cranks.

I was afraid the steep climb would be ice covered as it was a couple of weeks ago. It wasn't. I think my complaint to the Department of Parks and Recreation (yes, that's really the name) worked. Unfortunately, there were a couple of iced over areas, but they were on level ground. I submitted a complaint about the first one and walked over it carefully. The second was not far, so I hope they'll find it and remedy it, too. This smartphone app for filing complaints is great. I take a picture, I fill out the form, it creates a ticket, they have my contact info, and everything works. It's quick, too.

I did an unusual (for me) Monday commute, which meant I had to get up at 4:30 am and leave the house by 5:15 in order to be ready for our 7 AM Monday AM staff meeting. Main reason is because it's supposed to rain today (Tuesday), and I didn't want to be out on the bike instead of picking up V-day goodies for wifey after work. :thumb:

Pretty nice ride both ways, no problems. Around 40 degrees with a light tail wind in the morning, and upper 50's with zero wind in the afternoon. Not bad, because I had expected to have a head wind going home. With no wind I was able to manage a 13.0 MPH moving average.

For the rest of the week, I may try to commute on both Wednesday and Friday this week, to make up for only going 1 day last week.

Architecture firm, I guess they want to get it out of the way without cutting into 8-5 production time hours. We get to leave at 4 on Fridays because of it, though.

Around 29F as I left the house. Winds were fairly light and mainly a tailwind. Saw three deer and a raccoon.

Two mornings in a row of winter-like temps, 29F this morning. Easy ride because of tail winds

Similar to yesterday: 24°F with lots of ice from the freeze/thaw cycles. Will get above freezing again today so I rode the hybrid without studded tires and just went slow and careful over all of the ice patches.

Also have found it helps to take as straight of a line across them as I can. This meant around icy curves I'd go straight across the ice and turn hard on the little patches of dry pavement to line myself up so I could hit the next icy patch straight. I guess that's one way to break up the "ho-hum" of the morning commute. :)
