First commute of the year, I get a flat from a staple about a mile from work. Ugh. CO2 inflator device worked great, changed in about 10 minutes. Weather was nice though, mid 50's. Stayed late at work til dark, storms came in earlier than expected and decided to call for a ride home. Not a good start to the year.

jrickards 03-10-17 06:57 AM

Another cold commute, -17C/2F with a wind chill of -24C/-11F and believe you me, I felt that wind chill as I was riding into it for about 1/2 of the ride. I wore the same gear as yesterday but with good mitts and my hands were good. My ankles were cold at the beginning because near the beginning, is a big hill that is open to the cross wind but a bit later, after more cycling, I don't recall my ankles being cold.

I have to stay late at work tonight so it could be a cold ride home too but maybe the wind will have died down or will be at my back.

Have a great weekend!

Clocks go forward Saturday night!!

mgw4jc 03-10-17 07:22 AM

We had some early morning rains that stopped at about 6am. Roads were wet coming in, but nothing from the sky. One more nice, warm day before a cooler weekend and even a chance of snow Sunday morning.

Happy Friday!

Winter is back!

8°F this morning with a stout north wind bringing the wind chill to -9°F. I attempted to go for a run before work, but aborted after 1/2 mile because the wind was cutting right through my clothes.

On the bicycle I had to fight the wind on the way to work. They're predicting the wind will shift this afternoon so it sounds like I'll get to fight it again on the way home.

Snow begins this evening. About 3" predicted by tomorrow morning. Then on Sunday another round is expected to dump 6" more. Looks like I'll be back on the winter bike next week.

arsprod 03-10-17 08:52 AM

The ride home yesterday was 62F with a tailwind - ride in this morning was 30F with a tailwind... think there's been a weather shift?! Winds predicted to increase to 15+ this afternoon. yay...

HardyWeinberg 03-10-17 10:35 AM

49F, misty, some wind gusts (supposed to get some 50mph gusts later). I felt strong today for the first time since I can't remember when. Mostly for a while I have been well enough off to appreciate the machine getting me here in spite of myself, but earlier this week and later last week I was downright weak (so drove Tuesday, and had yesterday off), so this is great.

ptempel 03-10-17 10:46 AM

No riding for me since last few days. Was at a training class and needed to haul in my laptop for it. Too bad since it was downtown by Water Street and the weather was good. I did that ride on Tuesday. Today is out since we're supposed to get 1-3 inches of snow. We may also get 8-12 inches next Tuesday. So winter finally rears its ugly head. Albeit in March (instead of February)...

Keep waiting for that damn lamb.

Cold enough this morning to go with thermal socks and shoe covers. It helped.

Tundra_Man 03-13-17 08:00 AM

13°F, a stiff headwind and 6" of fresh unplowed snow. Good day to drive to work, right? Nope.

Started the day by snowblowing the driveway. Then I hopped on the bike.

The temp and wind were business as usual. However this snow was the kind that was extremely dense. Not light and powdery, but not wet and slushy. Once I got out on the unplowed MUP It felt like I was riding through a giant bag of flour. Even in my granny gear it was tough pedaling and I found myself mashing the pedals just to keep the bike moving forward.

I had to stop every 3/4 of a mile or so just to let my heart rate come back down to a reasonably safe range. Took me about 50 minutes to travel 4 miles. But I made it. The best part was hearing everyone in the office complain about how hard it was for them to drive in this snow. I just shut my mouth, smiled and nodded.

Dark. But I like DST so no complaints. 30F with mild winds - accumulating snow forecast for today and tomorrow but I'm reluctant to call what we get snow after seeing Tundra_Man's pictures!

rhm 03-13-17 08:49 AM

Painfully cold this morning! But with a bright full moon overhead, it was nice, in its wintery way, with the moonlight reflecting off the patches of snow and ice.

At least you had daylight! I guess your work doesn't start until 9 AM or so?

Sun was just starting to come up when I left the house at 7:30. Work officially started at 8, but I wound up arriving about 20 minutes late. Still beat most everyone else to the office as traffic was moving slow. These pictures were taken about 8:10.

ptempel 03-13-17 10:41 AM

Was pretty cold at 21F this morning. Was a nice ride with little to no traffic and no other crazy cyclists on the road. :) Tomorrow will be brutal with the snow storm. So I guess I'll need to take tomorrow and probably also Wed off the bike (knowing how good the plowing and train service can be around here). Maybe can break out the mag trainer in the basement to get some exercise in. But I'm sure that I'll be outside shoveling the snow at least three times tomorrow... :(

Well that must be nice. I have to leave at 6 AM on most days to make it to work in time to shower and change by 8 AM. So as of now I'll be in the dark for most of the morning commute until about late May or so.

It all depends where I'm working on a particular day. Today's client is just 4 miles from the house and doesn't have a shower available, so I shower at home before I leave. Normally leaving by 7:30 gives me plenty of time to get there by 8:00, but the snow this morning significantly slowed my pace.

Other clients of varying distances and facilities cause me to adjust my departure time accordingly.

If I'm working from our company's office which is 8 miles from home, then I'll leave around 6:45 and shower after I arrive. On those days I'm riding in the dark for much of the morning commute in the early spring and fall.

I should get two commutes in this week, maybe three.

mr geeker 03-13-17 08:16 PM

My commute was a snowy ride along a series of bike trails. Oh, and it was scenic :thumb:

mgw4jc 03-14-17 06:42 AM

Cold. Wet. Dark.
Really just sprinkling, but it rained most of the night so the roads were plenty wet too. I made it in just fine I suppose.

Tundra_Man 03-14-17 07:38 AM

Easy ride this morning. 13°F, tail wind, MUP had been plowed and the additional snow they said was possible overnight didn't materialize. Rode the winter bike because there's lots of ice on the ground.

Have to ride across town at 11 AM. Should still have a tailwind so that won't be too bad.

Have to ride home from the office fighting the wind. Not looking forward to that.

One for me if I'm lucky... yet again. I drove today, partly because I didn't want to ride in the cold. And partly because my e-bike parts arrive today, and the box is 35 pounds according to UPS tracking. :thumb:

wphamilton 03-14-17 07:57 AM

Weather Underground was fibbing to me for once - not only was it raining, but it never let up. I stopped under the first bridge to put my shoe covers on, and my work shirt into the plastic bag. I still feel dumb for arriving soaked clothes in my bag, three years ago, when I had a bag in my pack and didn't use it, so I wasn't going to let that happen again.

Since I'm going slow and easy in this weather I got a little bored and counted deer. 16 total in five different groups, the biggest was half a dozen. I think they just like to run when it's cold drizzling rain.

Darth Lefty 03-14-17 09:46 AM

Another faster, further, clockwise ride. Weather here is opposite of Northeast. Pretty nearly perfect.

KCBikeCommuter 03-14-17 10:04 AM

Around 25F this morning, but the winds were much better than yesterday... and what wind there was provided a nice tailwind.
