55F and foggy but no rain. It's bike to school day - nice to see lots of kids on bicycles!

Almost 70 degree's.. perfect! Replaced both bike's chains last night and the freewheel on one. First time for me, guess I did it right didn't fall apart this morning.

Just perfect weather for commuting, both yesterday and today. Yesterday, though, just after I left the office, I ended up getting stung by something (bee, wasp etc.) on my left temple right behind my left glasses side arm. I could feel something in that area like an insect, which wasn't unusual as I'll get flies or gnats up around the top of my glasses on my forehead from time to time. So I reached up and felt the insect, and thought it might be a ladybug at first. Then I felt the pain. I suddenly realized what happened and chucked my glasses off the side of the road like "I THREW IT ON THE GROUNDDDD!!!" :P (type in "threw" on YouTube if you don't know the reference).

So then I had to stop and circle back to get my glasses on the grassy edge of the road (2-lane rural, no shoulder). I also tore off my helmet and skullcap and threw those on the ground, then used my phone front camera to check out the damage. Just a small red welt and a bit of soreness. I put everything back on and continued the other 14 miles home. By the time I got home it didn't really hurt anymore and I couldn't see any sign of the sting. This morning nothing visible, and only a tiny lump in that area of my face. So I guess that means there were definitely no allergic reactions or anything, so that's good.

Other than that a nice spring day with a nice tail wind. :)

I was on line at my local pizzeria last night, and the guy ahead of me complained to me about how cold the weather is for May. It's been about 50ºF in the mornings and about 63º in the peak of the day. I told him to be happy, because we'll be begging for weather like this in the summer. I'm very happy about it.

I got home late last night and woke up super tired this morning. My body told me no bike commuting. And I forced myself to do it anyway, and I had a great time. After trying to improve my average travel speed for a year or so, I am finally starting to succeed. I'm hoping that an improved travel speed will also bring better endurance for weekend rides.

Rode with my daughter to her school this morning. It's the best part of my day.

essiemyra 05-11-17 04:56 AM

This mornings commute was a nice uneventful ride with the temp at 47f degrees and partly cloudy. But when passing the blooming lilacs along my ride they smell so wonderful. What a nice way to start the day!

esmith2039 05-11-17 05:48 AM

60 degrees but a constant NW wind. Bike to work day but didn't see or hear of anything around KC.. doesn't surprise me though!

When I got to Penn Station yesterday afternoon my train was just being announced over the PA; they said it was "approaching the station." Never a good sign. Ten minutes later, they made the same announcement :notamused: but it wasn't a long wait after all. I'd guess we left five minutes late. My ride home from the station was lovely; a bit of a tail wind, warm sun, cool air, really very nice until a couple hundred yards from home when a bug flew into my eye. It was just a little bug but it stung like crazy. Riding with one eye, I tried to open my other eye but it was just too painful. And suddenly it got really hard to ride! Just as I was getting home I realized I'd been squeezing the rear brake lever ever since the bug impact! Doh. I washed my eye out and took a benedryl and it got better.

A cool ride this morning. A fox ran across the road in front of me. Full moon behind light clouds. Pretty nice!

Not sure about KC, but I think National Bike to Work Day is next Friday. You better get an early start to beat the bike traffic that day will bring.

I had to take the car in for service and an inspection. So I rode the 4.5 miles from there to the office and will go back at lunch to get the car. This puts me on a fairly busy two lane road for about 2.5 miles, one that I can normally avoid. I managed to average 20mph for the first two miles including filtering through two stop lights. The road has several middle turn lanes so that helped the cars get around me.

Overheard at the service department while I was waiting:
Agent: Good Morning! How are you today?
Customer: Good. How are you?
Agent: I'm good, thanks. Yourself?

Another beautiful morning. 40°F with a light north wind. Not a cloud in the sky. For the fifth time since last Thursday I tacked on extra miles rather than going directly to work. Today I rode about 10 additional.

Just realized that yesterday was the 15 month anniversary since the last time I drove to work. Time flies when you're having fun.

noglider 05-11-17 10:11 AM

Yesterday, I think I pushed myself harder than ever on a commuting ride. It felt fantastic, but I think I'm paying for it now. No regrets, but I'm tired.

A skunk was about to cross the path, and when it heard or saw me, it retracted to the woods by the path. I came upon a man on foot coming the other way, and I warned him. I think I scared him more than necessary.

Darth Lefty 05-11-17 11:17 AM

This week has been a mess and so far I've only ridden Tuesday. I hope Friday will be a riding day but can't guarantee it to myself.

kellichou 05-11-17 12:00 PM

My car has been in the shop today and yesterday, so I've had a couple of nice 9 miles each way commutes. There's been some rain, but not too bad. Feels good after not riding for 6 days--we had bad thunderstorms and a person died, so I didn't want to be dumb, riding in thunderstorms.

The mornings have been glorious, high 40s and cool and misty. Only bad thing was twice yesterday I had a vengeful father Canadian goose hissing at me for daring to ride past his family. Once I shrieked, cause he was being pretty terrifying. I lived to tell the tale. I know that geese and swans get pretty protective of their goslings/cygnets. Can't say I blame them!

Whynot1999 05-11-17 12:13 PM

This morning was really nice. I was late, but the weather was sunny-cloudy (you know?) so it was both bright out and cool at the same time. The wind was just slight enough to wick the sweat off of my back, so I got to school barely sweaty. My school has 2 bike racks, both in very inconvenient spots, so I ended up arriving to class about 15 minutes late, but the weather made up for it :)

caloso 05-11-17 12:29 PM

Nice day, although a bit cool for May in NorCal. It's been a weird weather year.

PatrickGSR94 05-11-17 01:26 PM

3rd nice day in a row. Took the regular road bike again (e-bike yesterday), and it was tough this morning with a head wind. I think I need a break, haven't driven my car since Monday, so I probably will tomorrow since rain is forecast. An extra hour of sleep to boot, since I've had to "get my @$$ up at 5 AM every day this week" (Paraphrased movie reference, anyone know?) :P

PatrickGSR94 05-11-17 07:54 PM

And a nice ride home, but man I'm BEAT after commuting 3 days in a row for a total of 90+ miles! I had a tail wind this afternoon but wasn't super fast or anything. Gonna take a break until Saturday's ride(s).

mgw4jc 05-12-17 06:42 AM

I may need to start carrying Reptile Repellent. I saw the snake on last night's ride home and the turtle this morning.

Good rides both of them though. Overcast day today with some chances of rain, but maybe not until later tonight.

arsprod 05-12-17 07:19 AM

Totally boring compared to mgw4jc's ride! 53F and dry with a bit of a tailwind. Doesn't bode well for ride home but if it's dry I don't care!

High Fist Shin 05-12-17 09:47 AM

Good morning friends. Cold and damp this morning. Lots of water on the roads, but no rain to deal with. Felt like I was slogging through wet cement the whole way and yet managed to set my best commute time ever. Go figure. Also saw one of these on the side of the road:

Must of fallen out of the back of a work truck.

Was a really nice week so far. Was low 50's F to 60F or so later in the afternoon. I pulled a spoke through the rim on my rear wheel. It was a struggle to keep the wheel in true although better than the last one. So am on the lookout for another set. I might be back ordering from velomine.com since its tough to beat their $180 wheelset with Origin8/Formula hubs and Velocity A23 rims. For now, I'm back on the Orbea. I had to replace the axle for the rear wheel for it. The threads on the end were stripped (I think the one end worked itself loose somehow). Those Shimano Ultrgra hubs do roll really well. I can see why they still use ball bearings. Ah, repairs, repairs...

Darth Lefty 05-12-17 10:00 AM

I'd have stopped to get a come-along...

Chilly today, I misjudged and was glad I had arm warmers and gloves in the bag. Feeling heart-y and took it very easy.

When I got to work I heard someone behind me... another guy in full bike kit, Cycle Folsom to be precise. I held the door for him and we exchanged pleasantries. Then he hurried around me to get to the shower first. Jocks are ******** and they never outgrow it.

HardyWeinberg 05-12-17 10:49 AM

49F, sun among threatening thunderclouds. I was going to bring the rainbike but its tube has apparently had it, no more repairs, so grabbed the road bike w/ fenders.

noglider 05-12-17 11:19 AM

My wife is picking me up, so I can't ride home today. So I didn't ride in. Well, now I'm thinking that was dumb. Why not leave the bike for the weekend, take the subway to work Monday, then ride home Monday evening?

They look like they have a nice Voler cycling kit. But a gentleman does not a good kit make...

caloso 05-12-17 11:46 AM

"Jocks"?

It's a rec club, not a race team, if that's what you mean.

no motor? 05-12-17 03:38 PM

I had a nice ride in this morning and saw a pair of roadies along the way. I rarely see other riders, and these 2 looked like they were taking the day off to go riding.

Berkshire413 05-12-17 04:32 PM

First commute ever today. This a.m. It was 41 f while the return trip was 65.
20.2 each way. Feeling pretty good for an old guy..

caloso 05-12-17 04:43 PM

Awesome!
