Another storm at 5pm yesterday. This one was worse and longer than Wednesday's. It started before I could leave, so I waited under the front awning of the building (more like a front porch) with a co-worker who often rides his motorcycle to work. We waited until about 5:30 for the lightning, thunder and heavy rain to move on before leaving. It was still raining lightly when I left, but was after I was about 2 miles into my ride. There were quite a few tree branches and other debris to dodge on the roads.

Muggy and hot this morning for a good 15 mile ride. I tried to slow down and cool off some on the last couple of miles.

pdlamb 07-07-17 08:56 AM

Too tired to ride yesterday, so I had to drive. :( Pleasant ride this morning, mid-70s even if the humidity was 100%. Thunderstorm came through at dawn but stopped before I rolled.

Went through the woods listening for the wood thrush (no luck), but there was a rufous-sided towhee and meadowlark in the meadow in addition to the usual crows, cardinals, and mockers.

Too tired to ride in today. Took the car. Plus it is raining too.

you must have some really bad weather forecasters in your area!!

jrickards 07-07-17 09:11 AM

Warm (17C/63F, hmmmf, that doesn't really sound too warm does it but a warmer morning ride than it has been in months) and muggy, I was a puddle of sweat when I arrived at work. I didn't push too hard as I was still sore from my leg strengthening exercises I had done Tuesday night so I expected a slow ride but in fact, it was surprisingly quick (for me), 25kph/16mph so I'm happy and my legs feel reasonable.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Three separate deer crossings today too! As well as bunnies out the wazoo.

To add to the animal sightings, I saw a snapping turtle at the side of the road earlier this week. I wasn't sure if it wanted to cross or had just finished crossing as it was across the road from the lake but because it was a snapping turtle, I wasn't going to be a nice guy and carry it across the road (a Blandings turtle I would have, snapper, no!). And besides, moving across the road may have been the opposite direction it wanted to go anyway.

Warm drizzle this morning, strange that it looked like rain in my headlight but I didn't feel it hitting my body. Shirt was pretty wet when I got to the station. Riding was pleasant, but getting on the train with a wet shirt isn't ideal.

HardyWeinberg 07-07-17 10:39 AM

60F, overcast, only one bunny today for wildlife

timvan_78 07-07-17 10:39 AM

Dry and perfect weather again! I don't remember the last rainy commute!
(Although in the winter i think it will never dry out.)
New (to me) bike is running smooth and great. Loving the commutes!

JDinTulsa 07-07-17 11:04 AM

First day riding to work in a couple of weeks. 80 this morning, with about 60% humidity. It may be a very sweaty ride home this afternoon with forecasted 97 degrees. Heat index is supposed to be 105! Next week is supposed to be pushing 100 all week! Oh boy! :notamused:

May have to find a beer on the way home! :)

I haven't commuted for a year......been waiting for an operation to remove a titanium band that was put in after I broke my hip socket....and now bothers the sciatic nerve.
I can't wait to be back on the bike for my early morning 18km commute, and posting here from time to time!!

Darth Lefty 07-09-17 07:28 PM

I'll be riding again tomorrow. Not especially looking forward to it, I'm feeling beat the last few days and it's hot here.

CommuteCommando 07-09-17 10:34 PM

Drove to work four days in June. Drove one day so far in July, and hoping to keep it to that for the rest of the month. Short commute but hills at both ends. Longer climb on the way home with last 1/8 mile at 9%.

essiemyra 07-10-17 05:13 AM

It was a very nice commute this morning. Lately I have been seeing a man walking his german shepard in the am. The dog is not on a leash, but he does not even seem to notice me. Which is good for me as I am not a fan of big dogs that I do not know. The man does say hi and smile as I also do, so that part is pleasant. When I see them I head for the middle of the road to give the dog room. There was also a full moon this am.

Good luck in your recovery and get back in the saddle soon!

jrickards 07-10-17 06:07 AM

Unexpectedly cool (13C/55F) this morning given how nice the weekend was. I was planning on doing a slightly longer ride this morning but it means that I have to travel SW for a bit to get to the other road which meant that I was going into a headwind but riding into a headwind was not the problem, the problem was that the headwind was pushing distant rain towards me so I turned E and took the regular route and made it in to work before any rain came down.

The radio's forecast is for rain today but I think it will be just this morning as the weather websites are forecasting sun this afternoon.

Have a great day!

Titanium? Wow! Your value just plummeted after that more recent surgery!! :)

My wife had a stainless steel brace for a couple of years and afterwards, she got to keep it, can you keep yours?

I left home at 6am and saw the full moon too. Our mornings are usually cloud covered, but not today.

Looks to be a hot week around here getting up to low to mid 90s.

arsprod 07-10-17 07:29 AM

Too cloudy this morning to see the moon, and I was too bleary-eyed to notice anyway. Warm 72F and humid

Abe_Froman 07-10-17 07:30 AM

Rode 40 miles yesterday...T storms in Chicago right now. Believe I will be taking the day off :)

pdlamb 07-10-17 09:51 AM

Hot and steamy commute this morning. Strange, because the NWS was reporting 74 degrees and 85% relative humidity. Friday's ride was cool at 76 degrees and 97%. Did it feel that much hotter because I was taking it easy this morning?

HardyWeinberg 07-10-17 09:53 AM

57F, overcast. Only wildlife, 1 roadkill duck in the bike lane.

Oh yes parked at the trailhead all last week was a beverly hillbillies style suv jammed completely full on the inside except some of the driver's seat, and with the roof loaded like a beetle in an Ikea commercial. Over time, the entire load of the car became a huge pile of stuff next to the car (but larger than it, as it decompressed a bit). This morning, all that was left was a way overstuffed serious garden wagon. I realized the entire load of stuff has been hauled up the trail to build a homestead in the woods. There are a lot of such settlements already and while I have seen caches staged and brought up gradually, this is by far the largest, and I guess the settler can leave his car in the parking lot too.

I skipped this morning. Still achy-kneed from my MTB adventure and just didn't relish the thought of taking the whole 1:15 to drag the 3yo to daycare and then on to work.

As much as I have tried to make my MTB fit the same as my road-style touring bike (Kona Sutra) and my road bike (Look), it doesn't so the occasional long ride on the MTB can leave me feeling the same.

This was less about fit and more about 1250 ft up and 25mph down :-D See my screed in the MTB subforum

Was nice and cool this morning at around 70F. I had a great ride in from home. I decided to do the full ride today since Tue - Fri have chance of showers (some more than others). So could mostly park and ride on the really bad days and maybe try to squeeze one more ride from home. Also, this was the first time riding the Campagnolo Zonda wheelset that I received last week. They seem nice and stiff so far. I'm trying them out since I've read good reviews on them. Am just a bit skeptical about the low spoke count. But I'm willing to be proven wrong on the longevity...

Darth Lefty 07-10-17 03:19 PM

Today my supervisor (who is normally a much more active bike mechanic than I am) came into my cube and asked me to take a look at his front wheel. He says it's pinging and he can't figure out what's going on. He lubed the spoke nipples (no jokes please) and it was truthy as you like. I picked the bike up and spun the wheel... scrape scrape scrape go the bearings. XTR titanium hub, raw finish, not sure what generation. His late dad built the wheelset for him. I hope he can find replacement parts.

esmith2039 07-11-17 06:28 AM

Hot and muggy already! This afternoon will be brutal but I'm kinda used to it. What sucks is when I'm against the wind and then I'm not.. makes me hotter! Wore a pair of padded bike shorts today. Ehh a little better but really need to get a new saddle. Time to order a few pair!

I think Shimano should have a kit to replace the axle, cones and bearings. I did that with a recent version of their Ultegra rear hub. Only part that could not be replaced was the inner race on the hub, if I recall. So I'd take it apart, clean and check the hub inner races. If they are ok, then get the axle kit. Here's a page with the XTR M988 kit:

https://www.universalcycles.com/shop...s.php?id=42915

Don't know of this is his hub model or not. But it looks more expensive than my kit at ~$70.

mgw4jc 07-11-17 06:50 AM

91F for the ride home yesterday. It isn't so bad once I get the 15+ mph breeze going. And it gets better when I'm going through a shady stretch or if a cloud blocks the sun for a bit.

A decent 15 miles this morning. I tried wearing a compression Under Armour shirt today. While it is plenty aerodynamic, I'm not sure it is as breathable as I would like.
