I did a fair bit of biking about the island today. I had to go help clean out the kayaks from our weekend trip; which was great. https://goo.gl/photos/XZZ4iks1rib4RKyL9

On the way home I stopped at the neighbors to the in-laws. They had a junk pile from a house that just sold (to friends who moved off the island and regretted it and now are moving back). I ended up with some pots to soak chains in, maybe one for waxing chains. Also I got a new to me hibachi (which was great since my old one (also a roadside find) was starting to act up on the paddle, a nice big shop light, and a few small things. Should I post them in the found while riding thread? So I not have three working gas bbqs that only have cost me money in fuel and $30 in parts. The big one is quite nice also and would cost several hundred to replace; I love "island shopping".

Later I took the little girl out for a ride looking for her brother and I picked up an old walkman.

Anywho life is good and we're slowly getting ready for school to begin again. I have no jobs lined up though.

Another nice, cool morning and a little over 16 miles to start the day out. The last third of a mile to my office has a round-about followed by a gentle downhill grade. Today I caught up to a bigger truck going slow through the round-about, then I just tailgated him and coasted at 20mph being dragged along in his draft. That was fun.

I left bright and early yesterday to get finish up some things at work. About 1 mile from my destination I hit a crater of a pothole and heard a "PING!" sound. Suddenly the rear rim was rubbing the brake pad and upon inspection I found a broken spoke. I took it easy on the last mile and made it to work. I was able to drop it off at my friendly local LBS on a morning break and it was ready for my after lunch. $10 well spent dollars for their always great service.

First commute using my "laptop pannier" which is really just a re-purposed zipper binder that my son didn't want any more. It's not perfect, but just using two steel hooks at the top and the strap to cinch it tight it's fast and easy. Very secure, I might just use this until it wears out and then try something more purpose-built.

JDinTulsa 08-30-17 08:27 AM

Left the house this morning at 6am. It was a nice cool 60 degrees, which made the hills seem easier. Was also able to float thru most of the stop lights/signs on my route. Must have been pushing myself though. When I got to work, the legs were complaining about going upstairs! (Or, maybe I'm just getting older?!) Hopefully, the traffic going home will be lighter since I'll be ahead of rush hour!

Today, I'm on jury duty, writing this from the courthouse. I didn't ride my bike because I wasn't sure about the ability to lock up.

I left work yesterday after sunset. It was raining lightly when I left. As my ride progressed, the rain got a bit heavier but never truly heavy. I was on my racing bike, so no fenders or anything. It wasn't cold, so I was OK. The only thing approaching discomfort was the rain splashing on my butt, but it really wasn't bad. It was the first time in a long time that the path was nearly empty because of weather that discourages people, so it was nice to have it to myself. The rain and the darkness limited my vision a little. My eyeglass prescription is mild, and I can ride without my glasses if I want to, but I prefer to keep them on to protect my eyes from debris and it's where I hang my mirror. My vision through my glasses and in my mirror was impaired but not terribly. I just slowed down a bit, and the emptiness of the path made it easy. I had a big, strong tail wind, which made the effort easy, and it reduced the wind noise that my ears normally get. So it was a terribly pleasant ride, and I was grateful for it.

Chilly, in a way that didn't jibe with what the thermometer was telling me, hazy - the sun is very orange this morning, and breezy. Going to be hot and windy for the trip home.

Leaves are starting to turn. Autumn is nigh.

pdlamb 08-30-17 09:02 AM

Nice ride yesterday afternoon -- cool enough to add 6 miles to the trip home. :)

This morning we've got Hurricane Harvey Hangover. Overcast, cool, everything is gray and blah. But at least it's not raining! (yet?)

HardyWeinberg 08-30-17 09:15 AM

57F, overcast

None of those are fun units for that measurement. I am also assuming it is not Kelvin.

yes, those.

Today I took the MTB but didn't do anything extravagant. My budget tubeless setup had lost nearly all its air over 2 weeks since I set it up. Gradually... a couple days ago it felt about like a volleyball, today it was a playground ball. But it stayed seated. I don't know if that will keep happening but I pumped it up and it was fine for the ride. I found a Cycle Ops water bottle and also picked up two littered Rockstar cans on the way.

I came really close to buying a new MTB last night but am holding off. Our nanny and career problems are leveling out but are not yet wholly secure.

Darth Lefty 08-30-17 10:46 PM

I had a really nice MTB home. Didn't do any jumps or stunts - well maybe a couple. No complaints from my bum ticker, for once, and got home to relieve the new nanny right on time.

The budget tubeless had lost a lot of pressure while sitting at work. Definitely it happened at work, when I arrived it was still about the same as when I pumped it up. Can't explain it when it took a week to lose it before. Maybe riding flexed open a leak path that had been sealed. Good thing I keep a pump at work, even though it's a dreadful cheapie with a gauge that shows nothing useful. No signs of sealant leaking out. I think it might still be leaking out by the rim joint.

essiemyra 08-31-17 05:00 AM

A very nice uneventful commute this morning. The temp was 50f degrees when I left the house. I decided to start using my base gloves and a headband on mornings like this. There is no reason to be cold when riding. When I leave work today it will be close to 80f degrees, I think that is where the disconnect in me comes into play. I do not want extra stuff to carry home but cold in the mornings is not pleasant.

rhm 08-31-17 06:33 AM

A big deer, a buck with several points on his antlers, stepped out into the street just as I was pulling out of my driveway and getting up to speed. There was clatter of hooves and he was gone, but then I heard another deer following him. Not my problem; I was already past. But then I heard a car slamming on his brakes and honking somewhere behind me. I did not hear a thud. Then the car passed me. I guess he didn't hit the doe... but I didn't go back to check.

Not sure I've seen a breezy sun before. :)

Back to higher, but still better than normal, humidity. Forecast is for rain today and tomorrow - Harvey remnants.

End of August. Assuming I ride home today, I'll just break 500 miles for the month. And I even had a week off, so not bad.

Tundra_Man 08-31-17 07:32 AM

Today is consecutive work commute number 365. Approaching the 19 month mark since the last time I drove to work.

In order to pull off a streak like this sometimes I have to make somewhat interesting concessions. For example, my son's high school golf team has an out-of-town tournament today. The bus was leaving from a park at 6:30 AM. Coincidentally, that park is about half way to my company's office and I ride through it on my usual commute.

So this morning my son and I loaded up his gear in the car, and I drove him over to the park and got him on the bus. Then I drove back home, and hopped on the bike and rode to work, right through that same park not 100 yards from where the bus was sitting.

Being that I had to drive to the park and then back home, and the park is halfway to work, my net car mileage savings for the morning was zero. However, at noon I'll ride across the city to a client location, then at the end of the day I'll ride home so in the end I'll still be driving less than I would have had I just taken the easy route and drove the car all day.

arsprod 08-31-17 08:28 AM

Cool and cloudy again, 63F. I notice I'm riding in touring mode (i.e. slow and steady), subconsciously preparing for October trip across Ohio... or just tired

390 for me. I skipped my yearly 12/31 drive last year just to keep ahead of you :p

noglider 08-31-17 09:02 AM

I took it easy on the way into work this morning, though my time doesn't show it. That's because I had an unusual tail wind. The weather is super nice these past few days, sunny and clear, neither hot nor cold.

A rat crossed the street in front of me in the Bronx. Man, I hate rats.

(You've never heard of a solar wind?)

Still hazy, still an orange sun. Calm (the wind, not the sun), and cool enough for long sleeves and light gloves.

Just about ran over some small lizard-type thing. I wonder if it was someone's pet.

pdlamb 08-31-17 09:28 AM

I got lucky twice. We had 3/4" of rain yesterday, an arm of rain from Harvey, starting after I got in to work and ending before I left. This morning we're waiting for the main remnants of the tropical storm to arrive, so it's a heavy overcast, humid as all get out, and everything is wet, but not raining. Great day for a ride! (so far...)

Although most of the road rashes have healed, there is still some discomfort around the upper chest/neck/shoulder area. Waiting for it to go away as well in the next couple of days. Hoping to get on the bike sometime later this week.

Arrrgh this is so frustrating. The weather here is perfect for commuting and I am losing out on it. And soon it will be too dark and too cold to commute by bike.

My wounds have healed but my chest hurts every time I sneeze or lie down to sleep. This makes me believe I may have chest contusions, which take much longer to heal than road rashes  Whatever. I am going to take the bike out for a ride this weekend to test the waters. And if I am not laid out in pain, then next week I resume bike commuting.

caloso 08-31-17 12:45 PM

This might barely be 3 feet. It's hard to tell, but it certainly felt like a buzz, particularly since there were two other, completely open lanes and he was probably going 40.

I never get that much when riding seems like you have a ton of space ... it's usually like this over here

space is tight and one just adjusts to be more aware

A very nice uneventful ride to work this morning. When leaving the house the temp was 51f degrees and dark skies. I was able to run an errand on my way to work so I was productive. That is such a great feeling!

mgw4jc 09-01-17 06:25 AM

I bailed on riding home an my wife picked me up from work yesterday. Biggest bummer about that is missing the 500 miles for August. 487 total instead.

Some early morning rains made for wet roads, but not bad. More rain possibly coming around lunch time. It's almost too dark at 7am when I leave for regular sunglasses, especially when it is overcast. I may have to start out with the clear ones next week.

JDinTulsa 09-01-17 07:34 AM

I'm liking the temps here right now! Under 60 this morning! Left early so I didn't have to rush, and had light traffic. Was able to float thru most of the stop lights/signs. Ended up not taking any more time than usual to get to work.

The city repaved a portion of my commute... and reconfigured the lanes as well. This section of road was 4-lanes, but after laying new asphalt this past weekend, they changed it to 2-lanes, with a center turn lane and bikes lanes! This stretch of road was never that bad, but I do like the new configuration! :thumb:
