I really didn't know how old some of us were but I figured I'd be towards the older end of things. I'm surprised, but in a good way.

What counts? I rode my bike to first grade but I definitely can't claim I've been commuting the whole time since.
And in threads like this one I like to mention my maternal granddad who passed away from complications after he was knocked off his bike... at age 91

I've had more years not bike commuting than bike commuting, so as far as I'm concerned, anything counts, as long as you ARE bike commuting now.

I am 75 and ride 10+ miles each and and almost every day.
I'm retired, thus, I have no place I need to be. But I love to get on one of my bikes and go someplace (the store, the library, the LBS, around the neighborhood, over to the local mall, etc).
Am I a commuter -- sure I am, if commuting includes getting over to the park in the morning to welcome the Sun or going to the Senior Center to encourage others to get off their collective asses and walk/ride for at least 20min/day. Or -- going to city hall to meet with the person in charge of bicycle safety and bike paths. Also, to do the 16 mile round trip to Nancy’s mother’s house (she is 93 and can’t travel).
Am I a commuter you ask? --- I’ll let you answer that for yourself ;o)

I'm 73 and commute 15 miles round trip to a volunteer job 2 or 3 days per week. I've been doing this for 12 years and can definitely notice a difference in my effort, speed and recovery times. Still, I have always enjoyed being on a bicycle and still enjoy the rides, just more slowly.

I didn't want to contribute to this thread mainly because I'm nowhere near being the oldest commuter around here being in my mid-late 40's, but I wanted to commend you who've been doing it for years and well into your retirement years. I hope I can do the same. Here's to longevity.

Been commuting for 11 years now, 24.3 miles round trip. I used to commute every day, but when I turned 65, my wife told me to slow down a bit.....so now I commute by bike 4 days a week and use the big metal gas burner one day a week....unfortunately, my Jamis Aurora that I bought new on 5/15/2006 had to be retired last September due to a stress fracture by the bottom bracket. The new bike is a Volagi Viscio II, so I have shifted from a 55lb bike to a 17lb bike. I still work 60 hour weeks, but rarely go in on Saturday or Sundays. The Jamis Aurora passed away at 43,684 miles. I turned 70 last September.
