When Longboards aren't really Longboards
 

I've seen pics of various commuter and other bikes here with SKS Longboard fenders, and they always have great coverage, extending far down behind both the front and rear wheels (front wheel especially). So I bought some SKS Longboard fenders in the 65mm size (largest width they make) for my utility e-bike build with Schwalbe 26x2.15" tires. The packaging said Longboard on it, but they don't look anywhere near as long as the narrower 700c Longboard fender sizes. What's the deal with this? I don't think I got the wrong product, I think SKS actually calls them something they're not. I'm guessing there probably are no truly LONG fenders in a 65mm size. Thoughts?

Aside from not being that long, though, I think they look awesome. The silver color goes perfectly with the color of the frame on this bike.

Yeah, definitely not long enough. Those front mudguards are a bit of a joke. Perhaps Longboard is just a model line from SKS. I have the 700c, in the 40mm width and they are great.

I thought about removing those little rubber mud flaps and making something custom that extends down farther.

I've since ridden in them through some pretty nasty snow. They work great.

Yeah I've seen stuff like that, or made from doubled up inner tube pieces, etc. Your rear fender definitely extends farther down than mine, though.

Aesthetically I think mine look a bit more polished than inner tube pieces. From afar they look like they came as part of the fenders.

I had a hard time finding something that was flexy, light, and waterproof. The mouse pad meets all three.

I see fenders that look what you have on Amazon and the SKS item number on Amazon matches the item number on Universal. Maybe SKS changed the fender at some point and didn't change the item number? Or maybe the picture is just wrong on the Universal site. At the very least the product you thought you were going to be getting seems to have existed at some point. I can't find the P65 Longboards on the SKS site at all now.

I don't think those are longboards, despite whatever the packing slip, or box, said.

Regardless, while I love the mudflap, the most important part I have come to think is just protecting the headset and any length fender will do that.

Hmmm, those look like the Sunlite fenders ($15!) at Niagara Cycles. (One of the first results for a google search "fenders 26 inch".

The stay hardware is different, though.
Niagara also has Axiom Roadrunner fenders, in black, that look like your fenders--the same flap design, and the same stay clips.

SKS doesn't sell anything with flaps like these.

I have two sets of p-65 fenders and they are both pretty short in the coverage. The newer ones look like those with that style of mud flap and the little cap on the front/tip of the front fender.

The older pair are even shorter in the front, they only extend maybe half that far in front of the fork. Those came with no flaps or caps on the front edge, I made some flaps out of car floor mats.

Dang, I really wish mine had come with those longer, contoured flaps on the back.

The tires are Compass Rat Trap Pass 26 x 2.3". The fenders are Velo Orange fluted 63 mm fenders, which are made for fat 700c tires; I spread them out a little wider and they fit my 56 mm tires pretty nicely. And coverage is pretty good, as (I think) the photo shows.

Fat tires make a big splash when they go through puddles! You get a lot more water on your feet with fat tires than with skinny ones.

You should contact SKS. Maybe they can send you some.

Planet Bike mud flaps
 

Try the Planet Bike website; they have Cascadia 29er 65mm mudflaps for $5 (including shipping) in their small parts section. I put some on SKS fenders years ago in the pre-Long Boards era, easy installation and were much longer than my SKS mudflaps which looked very similar to what you have.

The flaps Riv sells are for the P45 (45 mm) SKS fenders; they wouldn't have fitted properly on your wider P65s.

It's too bad that you didn't get the longer flaps with your "longboard" fenders. I ordered a pair of "longboard" P65s last year that did include the longer flaps, in the proper 65 mm width.

I think you'll have to get a hold of SKS, or at least their US distributor.

Measure the length of the front fender and that of the rear fender. Contact universalcycles.com and tell them your situation. They should be willing to measure the Longboards that you would like to have. If it is the same as you now have, you may be out of luck. If they are significantly longer, it might the solution you are looking for.
