Tires, I'm a picky *****
 

I love good tires that are very flat resistant, my best experience were with Michelen Krylions but I was having trouble getting those a few years back so I switched to Schwalbe Durano s's, which I've been running, but now it appears they have changed their name to something else FFS. I loved the Duranos, and the s's were by far the best tire I'd used, is there anything similar? Any thoughts are welcome. I've had bad luck with Gatorskins, bought two of them, both ended up with holes in the sidewalls in less than three months, maybe it was just bad luck, but I never went back to them.

Have you ever tried Vittoria Rubino? I like them, trying the Clement LGG right now. I've gotten plenty of wear from them with few flats.

more flat resistant the heavier the tire .. it is a given

Bike Tires Direct still has Duranos, about $50 each. Seems high.

The Rolling Resistance Review site suggests Michelin Pro4 Service Course as an alternative.

If I was more concerned about flat resistance than speed and my bike could handle 700x28 or wider I'd consider the Michelin Protek Urban.

I have also been using Gatorskins. They're ok although I think that they seem to get more road debris stuck in the tread. Might just be because the roads here in the city have a bit more debris. I just took delivery of 2 Michelin Pro4 Service Course 700x23 tires. They seem to have good reviews online. They are on sale at performancebike.com for $40 now.

So will see how they fare. I don't expect them to be any more flat resistant than the Gatorskins. I guess they should be able to give better ride quality. I doubt that I'll escape stuff getting stuck into the tire. So I fully expect that I will need to check the tread for objects almost daily (like I do now).

Has the Schwalbe Ultremo replaced the Durano? Complemented it?

What kinds of flats are you getting? Glass? Goatheads? Pinch? Radial Tire Wires? Blackberry Thorns? Tube Failures? Something else? I try to prepare for flats, and get one every few months, but keep them to a minimum with good tires, and watching where I ride.

Do you need super-light tires? What size of tires?

In another topic, someone suggested these Panaracer Flataway tire liners. I have a couple on order, and hopefully will send my nephew off to try some out. :) He gets goatheads :eek:

There are some really thick tires including the Schwalbe Marathon Plus, Michelin Protek Max and Michelin Protek Cross Max, and the Panaracer Tourguard. Sometimes I think the thick rubber tires just pick up bigger pieces of rubber/damage/etc. But it may be worth it for some riders.

My flats are typically just the nomal "Oh crap I ran over some glass/debris". I have ordered an Ultremo to give it a try, we will see how it does. If I'm not happy with that one I'll try a set of Vittoria Rubinos as it would appear from everything i've read so far those are very nice as well.
