Now, here's a hair related question for you gentlemen of a certain age!

Has anyone noticed hair graying in a pattern related to helmet vents? I know that sounds crazy, but my hair is going gray in stripes. Probably a coincidence... but... sometimes you gotta ask a stupid question, right?

I could grow the side fuzz. But then I'd be fuzzy wuzzy not Baldilocks.

I'm bald at the top and buzz cut #1 at sides and back. Not sexy but practical.

I just shave my head in the shower once a week using the same razor I use for my face. Easy, relatively quick and very reasonable price!

I've gone as far as a #4 buzz all over. The trouble is, you need to get haircuts more frequently to maintain it. If I try to keep the top a little longer and buzz the sides, it sticks out at the intersection.

Now, I rock the helmet hair. It worked for him:

You need a wife who is able to smoothly blend the transition.

Or a barber, but of course that defeats the purpose of maintaining hair at home for free.

I found that cutting it yourself with an electric razor gets easier over time. At first, you feel uncomfortable and wonder how it looks. Eventually, you can do it almost without looking. I can even trim the back of my neck now using the razor and a second mirror in almost no time. At first, this was next to impossible.

I can't stress how freeing it is not having to worry about my hair. Now if I could only convince myself to make the jump to shaving it all off...

Anybody remember the Flowbee? I'm not sure if it's still around. It is (was) a gadget you connected to your vacuum. The air suction powered cutting blades and sucked up the cut hair all in one. I'm gonna see if they still exist.

I'll be damned... https://www.flowbee.com/

It's really a great idea. So great, they're not dirt-cheap on eBay, or I would have gotten one. Takes care of the worst part of the haircut, being covered in invisible itchy hairs for the rest of the day, no matter how much you shower and how hard you scrub

steve-in-kville 09-05-17 03:37 PM

I traditionally have my barber do #2 on the sides and #4 on top. My hair is also thinning (I'll be 40 next year). I grow a full beard. A while back I did the opposite... 90's grunge hair and I would trim the face with the clippers once a week. hated combing hair and the helmet head that went with wearing a lid.

I did get a neck gator to wear during cold weather. Allows me to keep the beard all winter longer. Love it!

My hair is long all over, but it's very fine and I comb it back behind my ears so it ends up looking like a mullet anyway.

There was a study a while ago that claimed driver's give you more space if they think you're a woman. My hair might get that effect sometimes (until they pass me and see the beard).

RubeRad 09-06-17 08:25 AM

Maybe they think you're a bearded lady?

liampboyle 09-06-17 10:47 AM

Grew my hair out to over 36" long at one point, ponytails help keep helmet hair at bay. Got a haircut for a job and went back to an Army style high and tight (#4 on top, skin on the sides and back). Now, I'm growing it back out again, still doing the ponytail to avoid helmet hair, although half the time I ride helmetless.

I have a professional grade clipper that needs repair. Where can I bring it or send it?

RubeRad 09-06-17 11:53 AM

I've got a Wahl that seems pretty professional grade as well, my wife has been thinking it maybe needs to be sharpened. If you find out what to do, let me know! Is yours more broken than possibly just being dull?

noglider 09-06-17 12:19 PM

Something is out of alignment inside so it shakes and is ineffective.

Pants mean something else in the UK; I think you mean trousers.

I have either that done, or #2 on the sides, and scissor as close as the barber can get it on top. Which...is probably like a #4.5 if I'm being honest.

But man...the bald spot my dad gave me is growing at a pretty alarming rate. I'm pretty close to throwing in the towel on hair altogether as well, and just keeping it buzzed down all over at a #1 or #2. I'm not vain, but the shaved look just seems a bit severe looking for me. And I have a funny shaped head, all ears and nose lol :o

Honestly, I'm close enough to Portland that beard or no beard most people probably refrain from making assumptions about gender. I've gotten cat calls a couple of times (from young guys who quickly disappeared into the car once they were in front me), but honestly I would be one seriously homely chick. I just happen to have glorious hair. Imagine Patton Oswalt with Fabio's hair and Jerry Garcia's beard. That's pretty much what I look like.

How soon we forget

wphamilton 09-08-17 07:03 AM

Balding on top, ponytail, I haven't had a haircut in years. People probably think it's a misbegotten fashion statement but it's convenience.

ptempel 09-08-17 07:44 AM

Sad that I missed this thread and am late to the party. Hair shavers of the world rejoice! :D Like the OP, I also shave my head. But I use a #7 on top, #3 on the sides and lower back and #1 on the sideburns going down only. Then try to clean up the back with the razor as best I can. But that last part is the only tough one. I either need a second mirror behind me or my wife to help with it once in a while. I tried a baseball cap on backwards and pressed down. But that didn't really work as well as I expected to even out the back hair line. What do you non totally bald guys do for the back of the neck?

Edit: Anyone ever try the Flowbee? Kind of smart having the vacuum and razor all in one type of thing.

Yes! I get a haircut about once every three or four years and when I do I usually get it cut pretty short. I just don't like to bother with haircuts. Same thing with my facial hair -- I don't actually want a beard. I just want to not shave. It's not a beard, it's a September shadow.

My brother-in-law had one of those in the 90's. I have three nephews who to this day get surly at the very mention of the name.

I remember the commercials for it on TV. Also noticed that @Kedosto also remembers it. For $80, I think its a bit pricey. I saw a Wahl kit close to what I have for $20 on amazon:
