Winter prep
 

The snowmageddon is making returns sometime in the near future so I'm thinking.. why not start shopping for the gear I need to commute warm and dry for the coming winter months. The biggest issue is my legs and feet getting wet, and some choices of weatherproof gear would be much appreciated, but nothing too bulky. My bike fits a rear fender but not a front. I'm always riding with toe clips and maybes some covers for them would be great because the wind gets to me in those frigid times.

Why can't you mount front fenders? I'd look at somehow getting front fenders first before anything else. That will solve a lot of the problems with wet feet.

I will add that in the winter when there is snow I simply wrap a plastic grocery bag over each sock (or socks depending on the temperature).

but a cpl suggestions:

• reg the front fender - they can be cut into 2 halves & mounted on each side of the fork crown. more work, but it works.
• re wet feet - shoe covers so may types to choose from
• reg wet legs - rain pants over cycling pants

1. CRUD Roadracers MK II or III (they fit every bike ... I've have mine for 3000+km with zero problems)

2. Toe clips are fine. I would recommend Gore-tex Nordic Walking shoes from Adidas like this as will be waterproof and you can go trail running in them

3. Get some rain pants (GORE makes good stuff.)

right now, I'm just wearing shoe covers over my botranger ssr's - next cold day the wool socks are being broken out.

When it's cold, I don't have to worry about getting wet - I've got fenders on my winter bike right now, may come back off once winter really starts and I switch to studded tires.

I only have track bikes, front fenders are not an option.

I love the showers pass shoe covers. Very compact and light weight. Be sure whatever rain pants you get aren't a cheap single layer fabric. Those fabrics are waterproof but they don't breath, so you still end up getting wet from sweat.

Track bike is not ideal for winter commuting. Maybe it's time to think about getting a proper winter bike with fender mounts. Much easier to keep dry when snow and slush isn't showering your feet.

...and after N+1 has happened, get fenders that have proper mud flaps on the front (or DIY some, it's very easy). Keeps your drivetrain and feet much happier.

just tried my new showers pass transit pants. yes they are double walled & are def. high end. I think I got 1 size too big but I'll keep them
