My brief talk with a new commuter last night.
One of my new neighbors in my condo building looks like he just started bike commuting, and I barely saw him on my way home last night. I drove yesterday, and barely saw him as he approached the dead end part of a t intersection and then down in the parking garage a few minutes later. He seemed surprised when I mentioned how hard it was to see him riding at dusk and without lights as he thought the reflectors on his bike and his new safety vest would make him visible, and seemed glad when I mentioned how much better off he'd be with lights. I hope he follows through and gets some lights like he mentioned, he's going to need them even more in a few weeks when daylight saving's time ends.

It's not trivial. Try to "enlighten" him, and direct him to bikeforums.net.

I see kids here every morning riding to school during dawn without lights, often no helmets and dark clothing. Their parents don't seem to care.

Oh I plan on it. He looked like he had been making a good attempt, and I'm sure he'll notice me when I ride home. I've heard from many of my neighbors how they can see me coming in a good way, and I usually cool off out in front of the building where a of them hang out where it will be easier for me to show him what I mean by adding lights.

Met a kid this morning who was commuting to high school. He had good lights, front and back. I encouraged him to check eBay for a helmet-mounted mirror for $3-4
