Lonely no more!

I used to tell my wife with a smug expression that I was the only bike commuter in Opelika.

She would occasionally remind me of the Cat 2 racer who works at the hospital who rides in to work, but he doesn't count.

So, I was a little surprised today to see fresh tracks in a patch of sand along the bike path as I rode in to work. I thought little of it, but I noticed it. Today as I rode through the historic district on the way home a fellow on a Gary Fisher Mtn bike said, "hello neighbor." I called back, "hey how are ya doing?" and kept riding. Shortly I could hear him coming up behind me. At the next stop sign we spoke and I realized it was Wade who moved in about a block down from me not long ago. His father-in-law Doug and I are good friends. Anyway, Wade rides to his job downtown at the fitness center. So what that he wasn't wearing a helmet. There's now two bike commuters in Opelika!

This little story may seem quaint to those of you in cities where commuting is commonplace, but I'm sure there are others out there like me who seldom see another soul on a bike riding to work. It felt good. Wade and I are going to get with Doug and go for a casual ride in the country together one day soon.

Congrats on the new cycling/commuting buddy.

I see lots of commuters here but no one wants to stop and chat or slow down and ride together. Most don't even wave or nod when I wave at them.

I guess it's time to move to Alabama.

Not at all.. I rarely see commuters here in Jacksonville. I have been commuting for over a year now and to date have seen precisely one other commuter. Would LOVE to find a fellow commuter to ride with, but don't see that happening any time soon.

Ditto here, I rarely see other commuters. I saw a woman on the way in today, but all I said was good morning as I was probably moving twice as fast as she was (it's my long downhill straightaway, I just couldn't bring myself to slow down ). Also she may have just been pleasure riding since she had no stuff (no backpack, no rack, etc). There's another guy on here who lives in my town but his commute must take him on completely different roads since I have never seen him while commuting.

So I think that's pretty cool that you've got a neighbor to commute with .

Sorry, not the book that I had in mind. But I'm familiar with David and Karen Mains.

I started a fad of bike commuting at my workplace

I was so proud of it I started a thread about it a few days ago.

I gave my copy to goodwill long ago, but I'm sure you're right Daff. The book for those curious is Vonnegut's Slapstick. Now, ice nine for everyone.
