What Trek is this? Buying first commuter

Looking at this bike, any idea what trek it is? It's asking for $40.

Is that a Regina 'Gold' chain on that bike ($$$) or is it just rusted beyond all belief. My money is on the latter. I guess I'll just never get all the MTB love when the assignment is a street commute. That's how we got in this SUV imbroglio with single driver commuters using the equivalent of military surplus off road utility vehicles for daily commutes and errands.

That looks like a great 1st commuter. Decent width tires that should roll OK on pavement, V brakes that are simple and powerful, adjustable-height stem for customization, probably a reasonably-comfortable saddle. I can't tell whether those tires are flat or not, if they are you might need new tubes. Depending on whether the rust has frozen the chain stiff, or is just surface, you might be able to get away with just a thorough chain-lubing, or a new chain should be $10-15.

I think that bike is a good value. If it fits you, and it brakes and shifts ok, buy it, and commute with it for a few months while you figure out what you want in a next, more expensive bike.

Or if it works well for you, just ride that one forever.

Hybrid by general type. $40 OK if it all functions... no one here can say about wear and tear.. on used stuff over pictures..

Yes, that chain looks like its rusted. So does the front chainring. The bike looks like it was left out in the rain for a while. OP, if you are not afraid of doing some basic work:

- Replace chain
- Replace rear cluster if new chain skips one or more gears
- Check and replace brake shoes if worn
- Check and replace brake cables if not smoothly functioning
- Check and replace derailleur cables if not smoothly functioning
- Check hubs and lube if dry

Then I would leave this one and shop around for a better example. If you don't do your own work, then it will get expensive for a bike shop to do it for you. So might as well start off with a better kept bike that is "ready to ride."

In my view, for $40 it looks like a good bike to learn basic maintenance, which I would consider to be a good thing.

Suspension fork, V-brakes and decal put it squarely into this century. Top pull RD and massive tire clearance imply MTB. Grip shifter says it's low to mid range. Maybe an 820 or aluminum equivalent? Good enough, probably, if it fits you. Forty bucks, sure, if you are willing to put in another $20-60 to make sure it runs ok. Sure beats the price of a new bike of this class which would be probably $500

Looks like the typical mid level early 2000's trek hybrid. Something like a 7100 or 7300.
