Upper 40s F with strong crosswinds. Haven't ridden since last Wednesday due to not wanting to dirty my just-washed bikes in the rain, but yesterday there was 80-100% chance of rain forecast and none landed at all while I rode the bus so I went out today when 80% chance of rain resulted in zero drops.

A very nice commute with a light rain falling this am, with the temp at 37 f degrees. Typically I will not start an am commute with rain but the forecast calls for the very light rain to end by 9 or 10 am, which give the sky plenty of time to clear up before my afternoon departure. With no rain in the forecast for the afternoon I plan to make good use of dry weather.

Lower 40's.. felt like the 30's. Not bad I just feel sluggish. Going to start forcing myself to ride, I've been extremely lazy this year. I was close to 1k at this time last year, this year not even 500!

Cold and damp....good exercise weather. But I was exactly halfway to work when I realized that it was WAY too cold for the half finger gloves I opted to wear.

That's okay....I can type faster at work now since I can't feel the pain in my fingers anyway! Silver linings and all...

Wait, what?! 47F and since yesterday's rides were heavy rain both ways decided to see if I could wait it out this morning. Bike karma must be on the positive side because I only had a to wait a few minutes

I am just waiting for the weather to warm up a little bit more! At least above freezing point, before I can start my bike commutes. Looking at the 10 day forecast, it doesn't seem to be happening till mid of April

Was ~40F with damp roads from some rain earlier in the morning. It should go up to 52F or so later on. It was a good ride except for a guy trying to shoehorn his car between the trafffic and the curb by using the bike lane. This was going south on Fredrick Douglas Blvd (a few blocks north of the NE corner of Central Park). I usually don't take that road going south but did this morning after talking with a crossing guard earlier. Its as trafficky as I remembered. Drivers that try to use the bike lane as an extra lane to try to get around traffic can piss me off at times. Another case of SMIDGAF.

Oh, wait, I remember. Drizzle. I was wet when I got on the train. And I slept really well on the train. It's just another day....

Bright light in the sky this morning, although there were still enough clouds I couldn't see what shape that strange thing was. After blowing for 48 hours straight, we finally got some warmth; 60F is just about perfect riding temperature, so I took the long way in to enjoy it.


Forecast for tomorrow shows a big jump in precipitation probability right about sun-up with lots of falling water. I'll spend most of my working day wondering whether I should get up early and ride in, or borrow my wife's car.

There was no wind this morning, which is unusual. I took the chance that I might get wet. The ground was wet, but no water fell out of the sky while I rode. I pedaled gently, as I wanted this one to be a leisurely ride. Well, I thought I pedaled gently, but the record shows that I went fast. OK, whatever. I kinda almost feel like Rudi, i.e. it's just another day. For some reason, I wake up well before my alarm and can't get back to sleep. I think I'm still hyped up from having a new job that I like a lot. And maybe I should cut back on the coffee. Boy, am I rambling!

Odd week so far. On Saturday we were brake-checked by a car pulling back onto the highway after a passing ambulance we were pacing. The stroller in the truck bed punched through the rear window and dumped some safety glass on my kids. I took said truck to work Monday with the bike in the back on the chance I’d get a same-day appointment at the glass shop. No dice so same procedure Tuesday. But I missed the appointment so same procedure today, and I finally dropped it off at lunch and pedaled back to work. But now that they have it, they have the wrong widow (manual not power slider), so pedal home tonight, daycare ride tomorrow, then collect it, probably.

Not a lot of talking at all, although I did have the once incident of a guy yelling, "Hey Lotus," at me while waiting at a light. I was riding my Lotus Legend, and he was on a Lotus as well (think it was an Excelle), so we chatted a bit for a minute.


As for segments in the city, I've found that they are totally dependent on lights and traffic. I know your route has fewer real intersections, but I'm sure it's still frustrating.

I had a bit of a fender bender this morning getting in to work. The parking lot entrance was a sheet of ice. My tires slipped out from under me once, but I regained control of the bike. They slipped out again and down I went. I escaped with some strained muscles which I'll feel for the next few days. It took most of my lunch break and some time after work to get the fenders straightened out enough to let the wheels spin.

Well here I am at home with no truck so there's no avoiding the daycare ride tomorrow!

I got a line on a 2014-or-so Krampus, the one with 1x10spd SLX, but haven't sold my full-squish yet to fund it. I'd still rather have a 2017 Karate Monkey (tires one size smaller, dropper routing, a little more raked out) but finding a yellow complete is apparently impossible and the next batch of colors is not yet announced.

Another nice uneventful commute this am with the temp at 31 f degrees. My back light is having issues. I thought I had the problem fixed yesterday but again this morning by the time I got to work it was off. I will try again today to maneuver the contact so it does not move.

I was a little cool in just shorts and short sleeve shirt, but at 57F and warming to 77, I couldn't resist. I had to leave about 10 minutes later than I like, but was able to keep a good pace and still made it to work on time. I felt light and fast with no extra clothing and averaged 17mph. Usual is more like 15.5 - 16.5.

Tomorrow should be a light traffic day as many are off for Good Friday. I work, but have Monday off instead.

I haven't posted much this year but, to date, I have commuted to work 23 days for about 240km.

Most of the commuting so far has been on either my KHS Tempe 29er with studded tires or my Moose Bicycle Fat Bike 2 with studdable-but-not-yet-studded tires. Today, however, I decided to ride my Kona Sutra with somewhat slick Marathon Supreme tires because after a drive along the route yesterday evening, I determined that there weren't enough icy spots on the side of the road to prevent me from switching bikes and so I did.

It was coolish, -3C/27F with a slight breeze and although my gloved hands were a touch cold, it wasn't that bad.

The long range forecast for the next couple of weeks includes snow and rain and sub-freezing temperatures so I'll be switching bikes back and forth but, starting April 1, I'll try to complete the #30DaysOfBiking challenge with a full 30 days done, not 24 like the last couple of years.

My route is too close to perfect for me to complain about that. For one thing, my "record" on segments is just not important. I have to stop at very few lights. There are very few, and most of the time, there is no traffic to wait for. I have to make fewer stops than most bike commuters around the world, even some in the boonies.

Last night's commute was nice. It was in the 50s, so I wore my summer gloves. I fell in behind a young woman, and I slowed to her pace. Forgive me for being a dirty old man, but I liked looking at her from behind. It took some effort to go at her slow pace, but I enjoyed it.

This morning, it's raining lightly and still in the 50s. I decided to ride in it, and it was fine. I should have worn my hat under my helmet and my gloves. It was very foggy, and visibility across the river was nearly zero. It was actually quite beautiful. I guess bike traffic was light, because I went very slowly (for me), and no one passed me. I'm relearning how to ride slowly, as I haven't done it much recently.

It started raining about the time I rolled out. Right around 60F, which is too cool for me to go without a jacket when raining and too warm with one. It was apparently a hard rain, since what was exposed to rain was wetter than what just got dampened by sweat. -) I'd have appreciated it raining just a bit harder, so it was falling fast enough my cap bill could have caught some of the rain that hit my glasses.


Still I appreciated the rain because it knocked down some of the pollen. (Those trees -- doing it in public, and right in my front yard!) When I cooled down yesterday and blinked my eyes went crunch. Today you could see where the water flowed, since the pools and traces were rimed with greenish-yellow pollen; but at least it wasn't floating around in the air!

Yes, that Hudson path is indeed really nice, and a great way to go North/South by bike. I'm riding up 1st ave every night, and of course there is a traffic light on every single street corner, plus turning cars during green lights on every other block. I'm not into setting records on these "segments" either, but I'm always curious to compare my results with my own results from prior days, to understand the effects of weather, gearing, bike selection, but the variables make that nearly impossible.

Yeah, this morning was quite nice, despite the spitting rain. I'll take it over gusty winds any day.

@robertorolfo, there ought to be less traffic going east from 1st Avenue than going west, so would it help to ride on the right side? Someone here pointed out that it's the smart thing to do on 5th Ave by the Park, but it's clearer there because there are often no streets going east at the intersections.

The timing of lights and traffic on your segment is probably the biggest factor in your speed. For me, it's the wind. The wind makes an enormous difference for me.
