Single digits are miserable if you get a mechanical. But it's way less miserable than it sounds if you can keep your extremities warm.

Seems like better glasses would have helped with the eyelid freezing thing. Some people wear ski goggles, but I'm not willing to look quite that nuts yet.

Your freeze story reminded me of one of my own from many years past...

Actually this only applies to the first time. Having the experience of sudden crank failure, I can say that it was preceded by a slight clicking noise for at least 6 months before I was rudely introduced to Mr. Tarmac. Since then, I inspect my cranks whenever I clean my chain. With a strong light and a magnifying glass you should be able to see any cracks.
