When will you commute again?

Studded tires work great in the winter.

Rode in today. Had nothing to do with the snow...roads have been clear since the morning after we got the last of the 12" or so. Once February hit...the cumulative toll of being 'hardcore' kinda caught up with me, and I lost the will to deal with the weather lol. Today was the first time it was nice enough out to coax me onto the bike.

Food delivery by bike is a huge sector of the market here in NYC. People are ordering deliveries all the time. The deliveries come by bicycle, usually pedaled by a recent immigrant. These guys are TOUGH! When we get snow, that doesn't stop them. In fact, that's when demand is highest. Sometimes they have to push their bikes, but as soon as they can roll, they do. Of course, distances are extremely short here. Each of those trips might average less than a mile.

Not to mention the parking problem with cars in a dense city. It's a nightmare. I sold my car after moving back into the city five years ago. Who wants a car?!

This Sunday I'm going to get my bike out for the first time in 2018 and do an easy 10 miler. As soon as I feel that is no problem I'll do a shortened commute about twice a week. When I think I can get a commute down to just over an hour (15 miles, plus a few stops for traffic, a slow area, etc) each way then I'll do that.
So .... in about two weeks I'll do a modified commute.

Maybe in another 2-3 weeks I'll give it a shot. There will be enough daylight and maybe warm enough to tolerate the 16 miles. Otherwise its a sweaty mess. My plans to rehab my old bike for commuting has not come to fruition. At least the roads are clean now.

Once the temps are at 45-50 degrees at 6 am I have a 10 mile ride each way. Its to dark and cold in the am. I will just wait about another 6 weeks. I am still riding but just not to work.

Studded tires keep me on the road year 'round in Michigan.
I can honestly say that I have been on one of my bikes everyday for the past 6 years.

At this point, it looks like the answer will be "when I get another job." Bike shop hasn't done enough business to make the rent, and the weather isn't expected to improve much until after the end of the month, so likely we'll be spending a couple days packing up tools and cleaning the place out.
Unless anyone wants to buy a few rebuilt bikes. If I could net another $300-400, we might be close enough to get the landlord to wait a bit longer.

Probably sunday, when I go back to work. Only looking at a few inches between now and then, though. I'd be surprised if there is any on the road by then.

I want a car.
The commute is 3 miles on a lovely, lightly trafficked lakeside road through old growth rainforest though.

I need to get back on the bike. There is a fine sheet of ice over the roads and sidewalks but hopefully that will melt by this weekend. I can handle the snow but a rain storm followed by a hard freeze just sucks.

I'm hopping for this Saturday or Monday. We've had flooding recently. Part of the bike path is shut down and many streets are blocked because of all the water.

This is where 3 wheels pays off -- you don't care about losing grip except your drive wheel when going uphill. This is from this morning

I haven't commuted in a week; the weather was unnaturally warm and dry up until about a week ago, when it suddenly turned February. So I'll start commuting again when it's not cold, windy, and/or raining/hailing. Brrr.

Biked to work this morning. Hoping to continue pending any ice or cold hard rain. Not only is it helping me to loose weight but I think it puts me in a better mood as well.

Mid March.
3 more weeks till I’m out there. We’re at 40” of snow for the year and it’s coming down like crazy right now. Barely above freezing during the day single digits at night. Gross.
Patiently waiting.

This winter I lost a day due to snow and a couple more due to drive train issues. Other than that its been steady rolling.
