Rivendell On Their Way Out?

I got an interesting E-mail from Revendell that said they may have a problem with cash flow. (Did anyone else get the same e-mail?) Are they on there way out? I hope not. Great comany.

Thanks. I gave $10 for the cause. I don't own a Rivendell, but they have been convenient to get some hard to find parts from for project bikes.

Hopefully, Rivendell will weather this storm and survive, although I believe this is a fairly regular occurrence for them, unfortunately.

I bought a handful of credit vouchers because I can always find something on their website that I want. The guys on the Google RBW group are rallying and buying multiple vouchers as well as simply placing extra orders, to help out.

This has been a common problem/issue with Rivendell/Grant for years now. He's still hangin' on.

I thought Grant looked a little stressed when I saw him on the MUP recently. I personally take great pride in sharing with him.

Iíve bought a lot of small parts from them for project bikes and I still have a merino wool sweater thatís 10 years old and still going strong.

But reading between the lines of Grant's plea for funds, to me they wanted to grow too big and too fast. Itís hard for a company like that who cater to a niche market to keep going.

I wish them luck, I hope they succeed.

And yes I chipped in $10.

I was going to get a $10 card, but saw the option for $50 and got it. They have been great to deal with me over the years, and have helped me on the phone as well. Great people to deal with.

There are already two threads on this.

It sounds like they have a short-term cash flow problem, probably with a typical mid-winter sales slump. Perhaps some new equipment they're adding, or something damaged. There wasn't a lot of information.

Hopefully they'll bounce back this spring.

I looked at thier web page, and unfortunately nothing popped out as something I was looking for at a price I could afford

Dinosaurs, as we all know now, didnít die out. They just added feathers.

I ponied up $50. I am retired and my current purpose in life is keeping Seattleís bike shops in business. I am happy to extend that to Rivendell.

Most died. Some adapted to the world around them. Sadly, this dino is starving.

But as noted above, this cash flow problem has been endemic at Rivendell for years. Kind of hard to say it's dying when it's been through something similar once or twice a year for, what, 20 years now?

So this is their business model . . . begging for unsecured loans from their customers? Interesting.

Or they turned to fossils and oil? I do love the look of their bikes and gear. But how many of that tiny niche actually purchase a bike and spendy bits? Some I guess.

Well, they have always been very good to deal with. They are are also very helpful through email or the phone. There are not a lot of companies out there that are as knowledgeable as they are, and as willing to take you call and spend some time actually helping you. Too many companies today are simply places to buy, with employees who do not have the expertise to willingness to actually help you. I wish them well.

Moving out of California could save a lot in overhead costs, particularly where they are ..

only Googleaires can call it affordable..

I'm absolutely a fan of their bikes and work in general. Having said that, I'd really like to see them use better judgement and improved business management. It would be best for all of us.
