Bicycle Bells

I have on my commuter bike this brand of bells but is there anything out there that is better or louder? https://www.mirrycle.com/product-category/new-products/

mcours2006 08-18-18 05:18 PM

I find my bell is only useful on MUPs. On the road you might need something like a Airzound to get drivers' attention.

The loudest bell is a double-dome rotary bell that is very common in China. The original design I suppose comes from UK. This is my own take:

I have this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It is a horn and light. Works well for me and it is loud.

I like this one. It seems to be heard (on the mup)better than others I've used. If the peds are "plugged in", I'm not sure anything short of an airzound would be heard.

I've been using AirZound Airhorns for 25 years. They are louder than any bell or electronic horn.

I bought a few weeks ago a Spurcycle bell. It's a bit expensive for a bell but like I said in another sub:

I was riding on a road that is crossed by a trail popular to runners, I saw a runner wearing headphones (cover your ear type) emerged from the trail (trees are blocking the view until about 5 feet from the road) while I was about 75 feet from him. He was completely oblivious that he was off the trail and about to cross the road. I rang my bell once and he stopped like you would see in cartoons with both heels forward (was funny to see https://www.bikeforums.net/images/smilies/smile.gif ). So what they said is true, that bell IS heard through headphones when the ringer is fully depressed.
The sustain of the ring is also long and the pitch of it is loud but not annoying

Its what I use. Its plenty loud. Pedestrians sharing bike paths / multi use paths, hardly ever bother to move over and 90% of the time just look up or at their cell phone to see if thats a msg. People are clueless.

This is thread number 289 started by Colorado Kid. Compare that figure to the total number of posts by the Kid, and you'll see that the Kid typically disappears after launching yet another discussion for others to respond to. The Commuting forum seems to be the Kid's favorite forum to play in.

Interesting timing on this thread. I was riding to my girlfriends place Saturday afternoon when I came up behind an older woman being walked by her dog on the left side of the path. First I rang my bell, then I said passing as I went around and then she noticed I was there. She said something about how I should say "beep beep" beforehand, and when I rang the bell again she points to her ears and says something about not being able to hear because she's old before she started to apologize.

Where Are The Moderators?

This used to be a great and friendly list and I've learned a lot from it. Certain members such as axolotl have diminished the enjoyment factor. I have to publicly ask where are the moderators? Due to limited time I don't do a lot of posting and replies. Yet some have found it in their heart to publicly belittle me on this list. I call for justice and a return to civility to this list. May the wind be to your back.

Oh, please. You claim to have "limited time" yet you have found the time to create 289 threads, many of them utterly pointless, and then you usually disappear. "Limited time" is simply your excuse for being called out for your trolling behavior. In your last thread (which you began with a false premise) in the Touring forum, 4 long-time members (all of whom, unlike yourself, contribute with helpful information when members have sensible questions) publicly commented about your posting behavior, wondering why you create all of these threads and then disappear. Here's a link to the last thread you created on the Touring thread, where 4 long-time members posted comments about what you are doing:

https://www.bikeforums.net/touring/1...h-camping.html

Now you are calling for "justice" and use language like "some have found it in their heart to publicly belittle me on this list". Do you know the word chutzpah? The classic definition of chutzpah is if someone were to kill their parents and then beg for mercy in court because they're an orphan.

On MUPs I just use my voice (mostly), if I really need attention (or to chase geese) I've got https://orpland.com which is louder than a bell but not enough for the cars/trucks in intersections. For them I have https://us.thehornit.com/the-hornit-db140-new

On my daily ride, I've got one switch on the right and the other on the left.

A bit of an over-reaction don't you think? Just let it go.

Your original post didn't have a lot of details to clue us in to your reason for posting. So, did you have an issue where you felt that your Mirrycle bell was not adequate? Which particular model of Mirrycle bell are you using?

That looks like a cool idea.

This thread needs more cowbell.

acidfast7 08-22-18 02:12 PM

I had a bell but I was at a party for my PhD students and had to much raki and they wouldn't let me cycle home (they need me to finish their PhDs on time) and in anger I threw my bike over a fence and the bell snapped off.

No more bell :(

Colorado Kid 08-22-18 05:08 PM

The reason I posted earlier about the bell is that it's starting to get rusty and wouldn't ding right. Maybe it's worn but I'm looking to see if there is something better out there. I didn't see my bell in the current line up for Mirycle. It's a large Brass bell about 2-3" across. Thank you for the all help in the new bell question. Hopefully. I can find something soon before I run into someone playing Pokemon. LOL

I use this one:

It's a poor man's Spurcycle

My kids got me a Spurcycle bell for Fathers Day last year. It is kind of expensive, but it is my favorite bell and I've owned a lot of them over the years.

I've waited a few days to see if you had more to say without reporting issues.

1. Moderators are volunteer. They have 40 hours jobs, they have family, houses to clean, meals to cook and also would love to go out and ride. They are not on here all the time.

2. There are thousands of posts, every single day. Hundreds per hour. We do not see every single post. It's impossible.

3. Most people report an issue and that usually warrants quick action. I combed through the reports. I've yet to see one from you.

4. If you would like to show us how to run this forum, I'm really ready to learn from you. I've been moderating on here for... 12 years now and I'm sure you can teach me more. Please, tell me what forums, sites or pages you run voluntarily, for how long and then show me the way to make this place better. I'm always open to suggestions. I'll be awaiting your reply via PM.

If you really need loud you should look to a horn. Bells are for warning pedestrians, and are useless in traffic.

That is a sweet bell and I have one but it is not as loud as an incredibell duet or as suzue crane. The spurcycle best fits fits the 35mm bars on one bike right out of the box.
