One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.
Was walking the dog when I noticed this bike sitting near the curb, kept walking the dog thinking the homeowners were just cleaning the garage since the door was open. When I came back around I talked with the homeowner and she said her husband didn’t want it and it was mine if I wanted it, "it may not be working properly" she said, "and it's a bit rusty". I took it home, cleaned it up, oiled the chain, got some new tires and here she is, my new commuter bike. The bike doesn't look like it was even ridden much, just sat in the garage for a few years it seems. Now I can leave my Rivendell at home and not fear it being stolen or damaged from Georgia's potholes.

Wow! Reminds me of a CL score of two 'vintage' Gary Fishers (one mtb one hybrid) that I got for the requested price of $5 each. Took 'em home, cleaned 'em up, the mtb became my son's for many years before he outgrew it and we gave it to a friend from school, and the other I 'sold' to a kid at church who was looking for a bike. He wanted to pay me more, but I wouldn't let him pay me any more than I had paid.
I didn't know the Gary Fisher brand was around into the disc brake era

Nice bike. The new tires suit it.

Picked up a Cannondale F500 this year pretty much the same way. Only one big rub off of paint on the down tube. Full XT, head shock had to be fixed and that was it. Rides great. Cost a grand back in the day. Can't believe I got it for nothing.

It seems like a Taiwan-standard 26er MTB with a 700c wheelset. Should make an admirable commuter

are you sure she wasn't throwing the bum and his stuff out of her house? Otherwise you live in a great rich wealthy neighborhood, ... :-) That's a great GF.

Was given a Diamond Back mountain bike from a neighbor. Said he never rides it and had it hanging up in his garage for years.

sound like my current bike
Sounds like my current bike (and only) I have a giant I got on Craigslist special for $20. the exposed metal is rusty and the grease is dirty, but other than that it just needs adjusting. I'm in the process of cleaning it up etc. I'm also basically the bike equivalent of a tuner so...I'm replacing a lot of the parts. People really for some reason think bikes are trash just because they're old. Like...not much has changed in the technology of the bike frame. If the metal is good and the frame is true then it's as good as the day you bought it. For this very reason when I got a storage unit recently I made sure to have extra room for another bike. I just know I'll end up finding another bike I want on CL or facebook marketplace for nothing. Better to have a place to store it right? I foresee this becoming a thing...
