How about describing such gear as “Don’t leave home without it.”[/color]?

Keep Bad Karma at Bay Gear.... That stuff that if it isn't in your bag, you'll surely be found walking.

I cannot stand backpacks for commuting, let alone a 15 mile stretch, but this just goes to show that everyone has their own particular take on the best solution. Thread topics like this are pretty much like asking "what's your favorite food?" At the same time, these kinds of threads are a great exchange of ideas and provide insights into the issues we all face. Good stuff.

I used to do metric centuries (100km) nearly every summer weekend in Germany with the same backpack I commute with daily :D

I just spilled raw beef juice into and had to wash it in the kitchen sink. First time since 2010 when I bought it. Thankfully, it's black, which hides the wear.

There's a story but you must ask!

We're asking.

I’m about to start commuting to work about 25Kms one way, so having must have gears are very important such as the following:

1. fenders
2. Backpack or panniers
3. Computer such as Garmin (if only you wish to track your cycling stats at the same time
4. Speed and Cadence sensor paired to #3.
5. Phone holder for occasional google maps
6. High visibility Jackets/clothing
7. Front and Rear lights
8. Tools
9. Optional: Strava then use a beacon to send to your loves ones so that they can track your commutes :)

Back in November was a thread on the local Metro Boston discussion group: “Boston commuters -- send me your tips!!”As a decades-long commuter. I replied with the intent of establishing a comprehensive list of gear (matériel).

My list was meant to be comprehensive, especially for the beginning cycle-commuter, to consider the possibilities. I added items to the list such as a bell, and camcorder, which I don’t carry [and water bottle and holder] though have considered a camera.

Yet to some subscribers, e.g. on the A&S Forum, a camera, and/or a bell seem to be a must-have.

I keep my phone inside my jacket, but that item is duly noted and added to my list.
