My family has had a subscription to the magazine literally all of my life. It's wonderful, and the cartoons are a big reason. Did you know that it's a full time job for the cartoonists? They each make several per week, but only one is chosen from each artist.

I really like the spandex/chafing ones too.
However in the original contest, I would definitely vote for the first one (crusade/commute). That definitely echos my experience. I am no longer concerned with evangelizing others to bike-commute (much -- I do organize a work-sponsored ride-to-free-lunch on Bike To Work Day, but mostly so I can get a free lunch).
And in the beginning, I would read about how y'all in different parts of the country would ride in rain and snow, and felt I had a duty to ride in the very occasional rain here in SoCal. Then I decided, I ain't got nothin to prove to nobody. If I wake up and it's raining, I'll drive. If I happen to check the weather ahead of time (very rare--why bother if the weather's perfect 360 days/year?) and see rain coming during the day, I'll drive so I don't have to get wet in the afternoon. And if I don't check, and end up getting wet on my ride home, it's ok. I own towels.

Good one. Although some of the lycra group rides make me scratch my head more. Why would a bunch of bikes roll up to a stop light, and then roll in front of every car in line to be the first at the light, when the cars are just going to pass them anyway? I tend to stop 50ft away from a stop light and then just ride in traffic drafting the cars for as long as I can.
As for below - my favorite example was living in Paris and watching the motorcycle rice racers in Paris who like to literally get to the next red light as fast as possible (and some of them can do it very fast).

I don't often wear lycra, but I do like to be the first in line at a red light. I'm more visible that way, and drivers have to decide consciously how to pass me. NYC even started putting "bike boxes" in intersections where we can wait ahead of motor traffic.
As for racing a motorcycle to a red light, maybe it's about getting whatever joy you can. I can only guess.
