what is the best kind of tire for riding through snow? i also need advice for commutiing in winter.

A thick mountain bike tire taken to a automobile tire shop to have small studs installed. They are good on ice and snow. But on pavement the studs make a constant tapping noise that will likely get you to quickly switch back to standard tires when the roads clear.
