Did it!

Thatís right, I managed to commute by bicycle my entire career.

After 35 years of riding in every day, Iíve retired. Or rather, I left work and am collecting my pension after maxing out on contributions.

Vancouver has fairly mild winters, but it still does snow on occasion and Iíve been caught in snowstorms and had to ride through them.

Far more common is the rain. Iím very familiar with that.

If my guessing is in the ball park, I think Iíve traveled something like 117,000 kilometres to/from work. Iíve traveled more on weekends and errands of course.

On occasion, Iíve had to drive the car into work for various reasons, but not too often, maybe once or twice a year.

From the start to the end, co-workers have always said to me, ďDid you ride your bike in today?Ē Iíve always replied, ďOf course, why wouldnít I?Ē

Amazing! I've done 28 years, but not every day. And over that time, my average commute days has fluctuated from all five days to as little none (that one horrible year), depending on circumstances and weather.

But now, even with four season gear including rain and snow, at 58 some days my body just says, "no" although most days it says, "yes, please!"

In the end, you are, no doubt, healthier than if you had done no biking, and thus able to better enjoy a well-earned retirement.

Congrats, you have my admiration!

Congrats on both the biking and retiring.

Now you can really start putting in some miles!
