Locking up your bike in NYC

I have an appointment on Canal Street and will need to lock up my bike for about two hours. Any suggestions and/or reccomendations fro a "secure corner/place" If I have a chance I am going to try to scout it out today. Thanks in advance

See if you can bring the bike inside with you.

That would be optimal. If not ask if there is a secured bike rack outside/near the building. Make sure it is either security bolted to the ground or cemented in though, they can have a habit of walking away...
Otherwise street signs work in a pinch, but make sure it's securely in the ground as well. I use a Kryptonite NYC3000 u-lock every day with a Kryptoflex cable to secure the wheels and so far no problems.

Bringing the bike inside is not an option. I have an U lock and cable, but was wondering if anyonme had any experience or suggestions for specific places on or near Canal Street. I know there is bike store right off of Canal (Metro Bikes?) would it make sense to lock the bike near the store. Or is that a thief's paradise.

You should be safe outside a bike shop. Especially if you know them.

How much is the bike worth? If it's a new bike, take the subway. Otherwise, try to find a place where you can hide it instead of locking it on a rack with beat up rusting Roadmasters and Magnas.

Ask the bike shop to baby sit your bike inside the store if you promise to buy something

Word. I did that once with a Metro store.

Is there a place to lock it up in front of the police complex? That may be ideal. My bike is a new 2005 Marin Fairfax but not really expense ($600).

I just came from Canal Street. There are bike racks, the "black sideways S ones".

In reference to leaving at my LBS: The LBS where I bought it at offers a 30 day check up. I called the store and said I was going to bring it in for the checkup and leave it there for 2 hours for my apppointment. I even offered to schedule an apppintment to do this. They told me that an appopintment was not necessary and that I had to wait with my bike. I responded by saying even if there are other people ahead of me and the LBS responded in the affirmative.

Well as you noticed I did not invoke the name of the LBS in this thread because I giving them the benefit of the doubt The gentleman that sold me my bike was helpful and I intend to go back to him to purchase another bike in a couple of weeks, maybe I should have spoke to him. But anyway I intend to call and/or drop by there to ask again.

2 hours is not thaaat long. Is your seat chained (or at least not quick release?). Take anything that will not easily walk in two seconds, even things you think are not worth anything. You should citify that bike, or another one so that you do not have to worry about it for such a short stop. Is a fairfax a mtb or road? it seems that the food delivery guys ride mtb's, most seem "resold" Parking at the jail is a great idea there is the 5th precinct on elizabeth I believe, just west of Bowery and just south of canal. good luck.
