I stopped using clipless entirely after trying half the brands...my feet always had issues with numbness, tingling, and just generally the hassle of switching shoes whenever I wanted to get off the bike.

Adidas Five Tens makes flat bike shoes that use a special kind of grippy rubber that grabs on metal pins on bike pedals:

My favorite pedals are DMR Vault's - both grippy and very comfortable - though I'm sure there's cheaper pedals that would work fine to.

It has turned out that clipless doesn't make you more efficient or faster, this combination kept my feel firmly attached to the pedals when I needed it, while letting me pull my foot off the pedal without a thought. I preferred it.

I got Chesters a year ago. I like the design and have recommended them before, but I have to say I am having a little bad luck. One of them tightened itself up at first but seemed cured when reassembled; and now has loosened itself. They're not really adjustable. I'll try a rebuild kit. But it's frustrating.

Race Face Ride pedals are the same as Chesters but without molded grips instead of the steel cleats, and cost a little less.
