Well this was suppose to be a poll....

What do you commute on? A triple, double or fixie?

Right now, I have a choice between a 46" single speed mountain bike, or my roadie (05 cannondale r1000 double).

In a few weeks, it'll be a 70" fixie, when I finally get all my parts in and build it.

My Dahon SpeedPro folder has a 7-speed cassette and a 3-speed hub for a nominal 21 gears. It goes from 21" to 111" IIRC.

I use a triple...usually on the 52 and sometimes the 42. I have a couple of hills where I need the 30.

A seven-speed single occasionally assisted by a 600 watt brushless motor with 24 volt SLA battery. I haven't counted the teeth yet.

triple, though I usually only use the middle gear. I use about 6 of the gears on the rear derailleur, though.

I have a triple with a 48 in front and an 11 - 34 in the back.
I ride 15 miles each way with a killer hill in the middle that I try and spint up in the front middle chainring and the 3rd rear gear.
The bike is a Trek UAV1 with 23c tires. It has front shock that takes a lot of the oomph out of the standing/sprinting, but makes the bumps go away.

BikeE AT recumbent with an ecospeed power assist. It still has all the gears including the internal hub gears, but I usually only use the full range of gears when not using the power assist. With power, I only need the top 7 gears. BikeE will do 25 to 30 on straights, zoom up any hill, goes about 40 miles on a charge. Sweet.

If I get HALF that range with pedal assist, I'll be happy! I'm hoping to eventually do the full 17-mile commute in an hour and 15 minutes, using the motor on the toughest hills. The bike is so heavy with the battery that some of the hills that are fairly easy for me on my Trek are too tough on the electric. But I work through all the gears before I push the throttle so I'll keep getting stronger.

Longhorn, the system I use is powered by lithium ion battery, so it's only about half the weight of lead acid, yet gets three times more energy storage. My entire system, including the motor, adds about 10 lbs to my bike. barely noticeable. Practical and hugely fun! https://www.ecospeed.net/index.html

Triple. Too many hills and too many years to ride a fixie. Although I'm happy to say I've never had to resort to using the granny yet.

One bike is a 70" singlespeed, the other has a triple. For commuting around here the granny is obsolete on the triple, but it has come in handy while touring.

I have a 30/42/52 and a 12-26. I have no need for the 30 chainring on my commute.
