Hi everyone,
Thanks for the advise on the last post on the Auroro or the trek 520. Well there are no stores close by my house that sell the Aurora, 30-40 minute drive. My local bike store said that for $800.00 for what I would pay for the Aurora he would build me a custom bike fit to my specs on a Soma Smoothie ES w/ used 2005 Ultegra components and Ultegra wheels he has in his shop. He said the components are two notches from the top for Shimano and that they would be better than what was put on the Aurora. That got interesting so I said let me go check with the board. What do you think? The links to the bikes are below.
Thanks,
John

If you're getting the gearing, brakes, seat, parts, etc you want then it sounds good. I'd expect to pay more like $650-700 for the Aurora, but this custom job sounds like more expensive parts all around.

If you trust the guy and he's gonna come up with Ultegra components, go for it.
The only problems I've had with my Aurora (1000+miles since May!) have been component related nitpicks. Still trying to dial in the Tiagra rear der.

How many miles are on the Ultegra components? If they are not beat to hell I say go for it. You'll be much happier with the better wheel set and components. I've built many a bike with used part and haven't had a problem yet.
Don't worry if he uses a cheap seatpost or some other non-vital part as it sounds like you're getting a good deal. You can always change small parts later if you don't like them.

The Soma sounds like a good deal.
The ES uses long-drop caliper brakes, which in my experience give much better response than cantelevers. You still have loads of useful clearance for touring tyres.
The "finishing kit" (seatpost/stem/bars etc) are the easiest place to save money with no perceptable loss in performance.

I was told that that the parts came off a bike that the guy is always switching things out and bikes. He barley ever used the bike and has like 8 expensive bikes he uses. I wish I had that problem. It is a 2005 so I don't think he could have used it much. I am going by the store today to go over the parts have him put everthing in writting on the parts or on a receipt then give him a deposit. I will post a picture when I get it. It probably will take a few weeks to get done.
