1st commute since late eighties

Had a univega alpino uno back then, a pretty good commuter bike as it turns out...bought a fuji road bike after that but didn't commute with it, really didn't ride it much at all. In 2000 I bought a fisher mtn. bike and rode trails only up until about a month ago when I bought a ...Giant ocr1. I've been riding nice mostly rural loops of 15 to 30 miles right from my house, so the 9 mile commute was no problem, more traffic than I prefer but not bad before 7:00 a.m. My fisher is lonely now.
the crucial stats:
distance: 9.1 miles
ave. speed: 17 mph
max speed: 32 mph
time: 32 min.

I started commuting by bicycle to a job where no buses went to back in the late 80's or around 1989. It was only during the summer but I had no lights, repair kit or bicycle pump back on those days. It's amazing how I didn't get hit by a car or even a flat!

Unfortunately, I stopped after getting doored and didn't pick up a bike until four years ago.

Very cool! What was it like back then? Was commuting/traffic different than now?

not really...I think it depends on the route though, back then I was able to ride most of the way through quiet urban neighborhoods, then as I got close to downtown the roads were wider for parking, and mostly one-way w/ traffic signals...I thought it was cool I could keep up w/ traffic during that section. My route now is further out now, sort of 2 and 3 lane urban arterial...if some stretches were wider it would be a lot safer feeling. I had the exact same time and ave. speed for the return trip...
