Disc Brakes v. Rack

So I slapped some slicks on my Giant Rainier, and it's actually a more fun commuter than my Randonee. However, one issue remains to be ironed out. I have not yet found a rack out there that fits around the disc brakes, so I'm stuck with this Delta Post Porter seatpost rack, and I hate seatpost racks. The Axiom Journey Disc didn't fit, so it went back to the store.

Do y'all with disc brake-equipped bikes just wear backpacks, or is there a non-seatpost rack (or trick) that works?

Thanks!

REI has a rack called the Axiom - fits on disc-bikes (I happen to also have a Rainier).

In theory, yes. In practice, no.

That's the one I mentioned in the OP. While it does say that it fits "most bikes with disc brakes", I couldn't get it to mount to the seat-stay braze-ons (they were too close together) and the pannier-hook device on the left side came to rest on the rear brake. So back to REI it went.

I did not see Axiom in the OP - my bad, but mine works just fine. I don't understand unless it has something to do with the model of disc caliper. I have the Avid mechanicals on both of my commuters, and the rack fits on the Giant and the Raleigh.

Yours worked? Man, I'd hate to re-buy it, but I might just do it if I missed something the first time.

I'd love to see pictures if you have any.

I use a Axiom Journey Disc Rear Rack, with Avid mechanicals. I had to cut off that tab on the side with the disk break. Also when intill you try to put fenders on it. When I get some time I will post some pics.

Yeah, some detail photos would be much appreciated. I really liked that rack... and got as far as screwing in the right side into the eyelet, and then noticed that the Rainier's wishbone seatstay didn't quite work with the upper rack mounts, and that the left-side pannier support rested on the brake, so I gave up.

Perhaps I was thinking too far inside the box.

I see what you are talking about, but those rack mounts at the seat-base are rotatable. My main issue was with where the caliper bumped the rack, but got that to fit. Sorry, no photos yet (still a C-41 kinda guy). Needless to say it was my first rack and I moved it over to my Raleigh (less-oft used) as I am more of a backpack guy. That Axiom rack holds a lot of weight, but I'd rather have the extra weight centered on my back than on the tail end of the bike.

I tried to mount the Axiom to my Sirrus, but didn't trust the left mount. My seat stays aren't round, they're rectangular, and I didn't think it would handle the weight. I may still mount it to my Kona. I did a test fitting and it should be no prob.

Once more, may I rant about disc brakes and accessories? Why can't the bike co's just put the calipers in the V of the seat and chain stays(like the Specialized Crossroads)? This would allow full use of standard racks and fenders.

Why not mix and match with the brakes? My MTB/hybrid commuter has front discs and rear rim brakes, which allows a more conventional rack. (I feel more comfortable with a rack that's more "squarely" mounted like that.) Your front brake is the most important for stopping anyway. Just a thought.

Simple: The Rainier has no posts anywhere for such a configuration.

Another vote for the Old Man Mountain rack, although I did have to put the bolts in assymetrically to clear the cable mount for my Avid mechanical disc. It is a bit of a pain when you have a flat though.
