I'm also a San Jose commuter. I go from Capitol/Snell to Lafayette/Central.

I'm bumpin' our thread up because I actually did the ride I posted up above today. It was pretty crappy because there was no contiguous way to take the 87 trail from downtown to Willow Glen, at least none I could find. At several points (S of Santa Clara St, at Auzerais) the trail was THERE but fenced off for construction so I couldn't go down it. And the southernmost point I could get to downtown (following "Bike Route this Way" orange signs) the trail was just a 100ft wide segment on either side of the river and no way out except back up to the street! W T F. I ended up just doing what I knew would work, took San Carlos to Bird , south to Willow. Maybe it'd be easier going north, I might have missed something. But really it seems like it's just not there yet.

The rest of the ride was a lot of fun though, especially First St from Trimble to Jackson. Nice change of pace from the "fire and forget" shoulder on San Tomas.

I just started alternative commuting in the past month. I am going from 85/87 junction to Central/Wolfe in Sunnyvale.

I use a combination of bike, caltrain and light rail. I try to ride all the way home, but its nice to have lightrail as a backup. To work in the AM is 2 blocks to light rail, then 1.1 miles from Sunnyvale Caltrain to work.

Some streets to check out. Monroe goes all the way from Valley Fair to Sunnyvale. It is relatively direct. However, I usually jump across Newhall to Park Ave, Meridian to San Carlos, then take Lincoln up through Willow Glen.

If you are on Caltrain and the train stops at Diridon, head up montgomery, it turns into Bird. Left on Willow, right on Lulong. This gets you to the Tamien Lightrail/Caltrain station.
