You'd think the members of this forum were stingy or low-income after listening to them complain about the financial liabilities of cars, then you find out they own 2 or 3 or 7 of them, and a plane.

For the record, I have not complained ;) I know these were choices I made and I can afford the fuel I just don't want to support it. I disagree with you somewhat though, this is the commuter forum so I'm thinking (and most have said) they are proudly leaving their vehicles at home, I don't think you can condem them for that.

if i had a garage, (i live in townhome), and i wanted to live in the country, (i live downtown) - i wouldn't mind a house like this

but i'm happy just driving to the country and renting planes.

How about you, are you doing it out of pure need, guilt, or desire and what are you choosing not to drive?

I had a 2000 Audi S4 which I sold about 2 weeks ago since I started using my bike to commute to work. Before I sold it the car pretty much just sat in the garage hence, the reason I sold it. Now we just have my wife's 05 Pathfinder.

After I started commuting on the road bike I purchased in July I found it pointless to have two cars. I loved that car but couldn't be happier with my decision.

With 4 kids that seem to be doing something all the time, we are still stuck a 2 vehicle family.

1999 Dodge Caravan (hers)
2005 Mazda3 (mine)

Garage is used to store everything but our cars.

I feel no guilt for owning what i own. I love my cars and bikes. I dont bike commute for moral superiority or any other feel good reasons. I do it for race training, as doing it while commuting is the most effective use of the limited time i have available to train. While i complain about gas prices the same as the next guy, i went and bought a TDI that gets 45-50mpg. And the motorcycles get even more.

Like most people, I have more than one interest, one of which is how to make my car go faster and what I can do to the inside. While I've got a list of go-fast parts, I haven't bought them because they're expensive. As for the stuff I want to do to the inside (install a mac mini, bluetooth keyboard and mouse, 7" lcd screen, gps and a ps2 w/ wireless gamepads) that stuff is also expensive. I don't feel guilty for owning a car, I just find riding a bike to work a good option compared to the subway. The downside of riding to work is I can't read the paper or do the crossword. The upside is it's healthier and cheaper.

10 bikes in the garage 2 cars in the street....

my garage will never house an automobile (it wouldn't fit) ;)

RT 09-12-05 12:20 PM

1990 Celica, 2003 Bonneville, Fuji Sagres and a Raleigh M50 DX hanging from the ceiling. Lawnmower, seed spreader, 96 gallon garbage tote. That's all, with wheels.

EDIT: To be clear, only the bikes hang from the ceiling

Very good point. Not many people realize how much they spend in maintenance. Most just think of the immediates like car payments and gas.

Oh, I wish I had a garage. I dream about it sometimes. I'd have pegboard for my tools, and a work bench, repair stand... and about sixty trash-picked bikes all taken apart and half built. And a beer 'fridge. You'd always know where to find me.

The car would stay outside. My wife and I share a Toyota Matrix, neither of us drives to work in it. We use it for errands and trips out of town.

TrevorInSoCal 09-12-05 02:19 PM

My garage contains no autos. It's too small for that.

However, there is a Kawasaki KLR 650 motorcycle, 5 bicycles, and the usual sorta other stuff found in garages, e.g., lawn-care implements, washer/dryer (stackable, 'cause I have tiny little 1-car garage), workbench, tool chest, air-compressor.

The KLR serves commute-duty in place of the bicycle once or twice a week. Out in the driveway, or sometimes on the street, is an '01 Ford Ranger that goes through about a tank of gas per month (slightly more during race season. less during the off-season.). It goes to races, Home Depot, and mtb rides in the mountains. The KLR and the bicycle go everywhere else.

Not an option for me, against the HOA rules(probably why board members get shot :( ) so my garage is PACKED and I have seregant garages.

Not for long though, new house has an oversized 6 car. :D It'll be nice to not have to hang all the bikes (7 and growing) in a little corner of the garage.

jeff-o 09-12-05 03:56 PM

A Trek 7500fx, a Trek 7300fx, an old black Cherokee with deflate tires (soon to be made into a winter bike), a 98 Mercury Mystique (mine), a 00 Hyundai Elantra (hers), a 6.5HP Murray lawnmower, a grass seed spreader and a garbage can with wheels.

We're going to seel one of the cars in the spring and get a scooter instead. The question is, which car do we sell?? :)

sbhikes 09-12-05 04:10 PM

I keep my 94 Ford Ranger pickup in the driveway. Otherwise, because I never drive it, and it's illegal to park a car in one place on the street longer than 72 hours, I get a ticket.

Imagine that, they give you tickets for not driving, but they wish everybody would not drive so much so there'd be less traffic.

chrisszee321 09-12-05 04:36 PM

1999 Ford Taurus wagon, recreational kayak,2 bikes.May hit the point where bikeage exceeds car value in a year or two.

Roody 09-12-05 05:26 PM

No car. Am I really the only one?

BTW, I don't hate any of you for owning a car. That's fine if it's what you want. I disrespect those who own more than one. I just don't get it -- what possible point is there to having more than one car?

1998 Jeep Wrangler (16-19 mpg)

Longhorn 09-12-05 06:06 PM

2001 Saleen Mustang convertible.
2001 Ford F-150 Truck and 2003 Ford Explorer, both for my husband's remodeling contracting business.

I LOVE driving the Saleen so that just shows how much I love commuting by bike if I'm willing to leave it behind. :)

soyboy 09-12-05 08:13 PM

i leave behind an 1996 oldsmobile cierra, it's way behindon inspection which is funny, i haven't driven it so it's not inspected, i can drive it because it's not inspected, there's also a 2002 cpi popcorn scooter, it's not a bad little thing, gets about 80 mpg but i also haven't driven that in 5 months, maybe more

What possible point is there to having more than one bike? Or sweater, or wrench, or DVD....
