Ultimate off the shelf at $750 +/-?

Hi,

Just wondering about others' perspectives. I need a larger frame (6-4, 63 cm road frame). I'd like a fast commuter. Was looking at Dews, but would prefer steel.
Thanks,
MP

Look around in The Under $700 Road Bike Thread. They are not specifically commuters, but it's a good start.

I would also browse the Commuter Bike thread at the top of this page, which i'm too lazy to link. Sometimes posters list the price.

I like the Surly CrossCheck and the Jamis Aurora. These are dropbar tourers and cyclocross bikes which is what I like for commuting. Both are steel and come with decent components. Both also come in a 62cm size.

I second the nomination of the Jamis Aurora...never been around the Surly though. Aurora has all the braze-ons and is smooth as butter. I don't know how or why, but the 2003 model is a couple pounds lighter than the current version...and they only go for about $400 on e-bay now and then...

Not sure what else is different but the 2003 model had long reach calipers vs. cantis on the newer models. Long reach brakes are still great for a commuter but won't allow really wide tires (32mm+) with fenders, but should still work great with 28mm and maybe 30mm.
